You will now do a close “reading” of a scene from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
We will watch the clip at least two times; once without sound, a second with

Long shots
Medium shots
Close up shots
Shot-reverse-shot
Lighting

After viewing, take a couple minutes to review your observations

Observe the scene again with sound. How do your observations differ?
After the clip, interpret your new observations. What effects do the sounds have on the film, on the audience?

Go over your answers together and discuss the effects of sound, movement, and shot types
Create an analytical statement about the effects of one of the cinematic techniques used
This means you are analyzing the purpose and effect of the technique

IE; Tim Burton uses a close up shot of Willy Wonka’s face watching the tube zoom over to foreshadow what will happen to Augustus, and let the audience know that Wonka knows what will happen to Augustus.

This time we are going to observe clips and interpret the techniques and elements with Edward Scissorhands

Pay close attention to the images, shapes, and the music
Write down your observations in the box provided
Half of your group will focus on cinematic elements
The other half will focus on literary elements

What can you predict based on the observations of the opening?

How has the music changed between the opening credits and this scene? Why?
What does the camera do when it leaves the room where the story is being told? Why do you think the director does this?
