1 Turn in EA1 to tray Lesson 45
Activity 2.21: Working with Cinematic Techniques Part 2 Activity 2.22: Reading Film: Edward Scissorhands

2 Activity 2.21: Page 160 Lesson Goals
Analyze how media producers use cinematic techniques to achieve specific effects Apply and reflect on effective strategies for reading film

3 Observations You will now do a close “reading” of a scene from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory We will watch the clip at least two times; once without sound, a second with Make observations (just what you notice!) in the box provided for the first viewing without sound on the following: Long shots Medium shots Close up shots Shot-reverse-shot Lighting

4 interpretations After viewing, take a couple minutes to review your observations Now interpret. What can you infer from your observations?

5 Second viewing: with sound
Observe the scene again with sound. How do your observations differ? After the clip, interpret your new observations. What effects do the sounds have on the film, on the audience?

6 Silently… Respond to questions 1-3 on page 161
Try to get a couple of sentences per question

7 In your groups… Go over your answers together and discuss the effects of sound, movement, and shot types Create an analytical statement about the effects of one of the cinematic techniques used This means you are analyzing the purpose and effect of the technique Tim Burton uses (cinematic technique) to (purpose and effect). IE; Tim Burton uses a close up shot of Willy Wonka’s face watching the tube zoom over to foreshadow what will happen to Augustus, and let the audience know that Wonka knows what will happen to Augustus.

8 Activity 2.22 Reading film: edward scissorhands
Lesson Goals Examine cinematic and literary elements of a film (tone, mood, imagery, motif) Clarify how media producers use conventional production elements to achieve specific effects Use context clues to make predictions

9 Page 162—Same thing, closer look 
This time we are going to observe clips and interpret the techniques and elements with Edward Scissorhands The first clip will be the Opening Credits Pay close attention to the images, shapes, and the music Write down your observations in the box provided Half of your group will focus on cinematic elements The other half will focus on literary elements

10 Interpretation Discuss your observations as a group.
What can you infer or predict based on your observations? Write your inferences in the box provided for the opening credits.

11 With you groups AGain Answer questions 1 and 2 at the bottom of page 162 about the opening credits. Describe the tone in this scene. What type of movie does it remind you of? How does the lighting help create the mood of this opening?

12 Second clip: grandmother with grandaughter
The next clip is brief—only about three minutes, so pay close attention! Watch the way the camera moves Switch with your group; if you were in charge of cinematic techniques before, you are now in charge of literary elements to observe Write your observations in the box provided on page 162

13 Interpretation Discuss with you group the meaning behind this opening scene. What can you predict based on the observations of the opening? Next, answer questions 1-3 on page 163 about the second clip. How has the music changed between the opening credits and this scene? Why? What does the camera do when it leaves the room where the story is being told? Why do you think the director does this? What do you think this film will be about? On what do you base your prediction?
