After the Pope’s Bull  Luther returns to Wittenburg in 1521  Luther and his followers created a separate religious group called the Lutherans  Peasants Revolt  Excited by the reformers’ talk of Christian freedom, Peasants demanded an end to serfdom  German princes suppressed the revolt with violence, killing up to 100,000 people  Luther spoke out against the revolt  Some people rejected his religious leadership as a result.

Protestants  Charles V goes to war against the German Princes that rejected Catholicism.  Weary of fighting in 1555, they sign the Peace of Augsburg, allowing each Prince to choose the religion in their region.  Eventually, all Christian sects in Europe that are not Catholic are termed “Protestant”
