Why England ?? ► Land, Labor, and Capital ($)

What 3 Industries were Affected? ► Textile Industry (Clothing/Cotton Gin), Agricultural (Seed Drill), Transportation (Railroad/Steamboat)

Factories ► A company needed a warehouse for the machines….called Factories ► Factories were built in cities so people began moving to cities ► 4 Major Effects of Industrialization…

1. Urbanization ► Urbanization – people moving to cities…why ► Factories are in the cities…walk to work ► Overpopulation too many people, not enough places to live

2. Working Conditions ► Factories were dirty and unsanitary ► Very Low Wages, hour days, child labor ► Dangerous and deadly (loss of fingers, arms, legs) ► If you don’t want the job…don’t take it…there are MANY others who will take it

3. Social Classes ► Upper class getting richer (factory owners) ► An Upper Middle Class emerges (doctors and lawyers) ► Lower Middle Class emerges (office workers, shop owners) ► Most of population are poor (factory workers)

4. Living Conditions ► No regulation Codes ► No sewage, No garbage, Little running water ► Slums begin in the cities ► Many people, multiple families living in one bedroom apartments

Coal Miners ► Long Days working underground for coal for coal ► Why is coal so important ? ► Why is coal mining dangerous? ► Coughing up coal

What to do next? ► Labor Unions Form – ► Groups of workers united to fight for better working conditions and pay ► Union Strikes – ► Workers all ‘refuse to work’ to stop production ► Pros and Cons ?

Should Government Help ► Laissez-Faire ► ‘Hands Off’ Approach ► Owners liked Laissez Faire ! ► What labor laws today come from the I.R.??
