How Were Your Exams? So, your last semester… How does that feel? Mr. Tulk Social 30-1

How to contact me! Are you serious, you expect me to tell you how to contact me. I’m in this room all the time and my is on the outline. But, if you really need it…

First 30-1 This is a course designed for those of you that are going to University. It is a hard class that will require a lot of work. If you are not planning on going to University perhaps you should think about Social 30-2.

Social 30-1 You will have 4 Major Tests. 1 Midterm. 3-4 Essays (both in Class and Takehome) As well as quizzes and small assignments. Finally, a 50% diploma.

Tutorial I’m in this room Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. If you need to meet at another time, simply let me know. Also, if you Facebook me. I will be on nights prior to tests or if you have questions.

That’s right facebook. You add me with the – – I will post homework and on nights before tests I will be on so that you can ask me questions for send me a message. – Please do not ask me how it is going or invite me to rate you as a friend or attempt to make me a zombie. – I DO NOT WANT TO PLAY FARMVILLE! – I HAVE NO INTEREST IN YOUR POST OR YOUR PICS… BUT, KEEP IN MIND WHAT GOES ON THE INTERNET IS THERE FOREVER!

So who are you? Okay guys, we are going to take some time now. I haven’t taught many of you before so stand up and tell me: Your Name: Something About yourself… (Keep it school appropriate.)

Course Info. Text books! “Perspectives on Ideologies” Also, you will have to hand in a vocab book. As well, you will need a note book.

…Continued Assignments. Number of Tests to be Determined. (looks like 4) Quizzes Presentations. Homework (Questions, Research, Reading, Vocab. books) Finally… 50% of your grade is your end of year diploma.

What I ask of you! I am easy to get along with! However, you are now in Grade 12 and need to graduate. I will help you any way I can, but you are responsible for getting the work done and making sure you are prepared for your Diploma.

“Life Happens” What do you think that means? How does it relate to this class?

Rules Very simple. I’m all about RESPECT. If you have a problem let me know. If I can help, let me know. Don’t be rude or disrespectful in this class. Don’t be late. Don’t have your phone on.

Continued No, Red Bull, Monster, or any other form of energy drink. If you are going to bring food, make sure you clean up after yourself. DO NOT be late for my class because you were in the cafeteria getting food.

One more very simple thing! If you think you shouldn’t do it. Then you likely shouldn’t.

Social 30-1 Ideology translates to the science or study of ideas. However, ideology tends to refer to the way in which people think about the world and their ideal concept of how to live in the world.

Okay, one warning… This course talks about a lot of controversial issues and ideas. Some, if not all of you, will have different opinions and I like that. I hope you will voice them. But, make sure to respect people and their beliefs. I will not accept any abuse of any kind to myself or any of your classmates.

Perspective What is Perspective? Why might it be important? Why should we want to expand it? What influences how we see the world? How might it differ from person to person, from place to place?

Let’s talk about this…

Little Deeper – Health Care Debate in the US.

Identity and Ideology

First, here is your vocab book. It will be handed in at the end of each of 4 units. Each day I will place words on the board and you will define them.

Ideology Beliefs Capitalism Collectivism Communism

Identity and Ideology

Remember… We talked about how perspective can influence people. Why was this important?

We all see the world differently. Discovering and developing your own beliefs / values takes time and will change. When you are in High School what do you Value? At Work? A Parent? A Senior?

What are humans like, And why do they act like they do? What is the nature of society? What is our role as individuals in society?

okay, that is a little strange… But, you’ve asked: why did he do that? Why are some people Jerks? Why would she do that? What should I do? One group comes to mind when I think about these questions.

When we answer these questions for our selves, we begin to develop our Ideology. Ideology: A system of thoughts based on beliefs and values.

Who are you? Where are you going? What is the world around you like? How should we treat people? How the world should develop?

Can be based individual values. shared among a large group of people and may then become an Ideology. Or Identify your own beliefs and values. Let’s take a few minutes and complete the sheet on page 7 of your text book. Use a piece a determine where you fall in the ideological spectrum.

No one is completely a collectivist or and individualist. We all fall in a line with a mix of both. Collectivism - Putting the needs of the whole first. Individualist - Putting the needs of the individual first.

“You’re either with us or against us in the fight against terror” George Bush after the September 11, 2001 attack on New York.

The Group is important. Be like the group. Wealth is shared. The well-being of the group is more important. Individuals are unique. Personal success and development. Everyone is responsible for his/her actions. Competition.
