Blitz Blitzkrieg or blitz stood for lightning war. The Blitz was where the German Luftwaffe dropped over 500 bombs every night on the British capital for 57 days .

Why did the Blitz start ? The Blitz started when Germany missed their target and hit homes instead of factories. Hitler wanted to have a massive army and take control of Europe so he could rule.

Air raid shelters Anderson shelters were introduced when The Blitz started so that people could hide from the bombs. Anderson shelters protected people from some bombs but they sometimes got blown up.

Gas masks Gas masks were introduced in 1941 after World war 1. Gas masks had protective gel which later turned out to be poisonous. But there were no gas attacks in world war two.

ARP wardens ARP wardens set the blackout time by reading the newspaper.

Blackouts people used to turn off all the lights when they were getting bombed so that the enemy planes couldn’t see London as well. ARP wardens would set the blackout time by reading the news paper. The Blackout was a key part of winning the war.

barrage balloons Barrage balloons were designed for anti-aircraft. Pieces of balloon were rare collectibles.

V1 and V2 bombs The V2 flew faster than sound and the V1 had razor sharp wings to cut the wires on the barrage balloons. The V1 was called the doodle bug because of its buzzing sound made by its engines. V1 V2

Evacuation Children were evacuated from London to escape to the countryside. Did you know? Pregnant mothers were also evacuated so that their babies were not killed.
