The Blitz was a series of bombing raids throughout five years! Germany was fighting against England and we both managed to get other countries involved. Lots of lives were tragically lost. 

The Blitz started because the Nazi's were getting worried that the English were too dangerous in the war. They attempted to make us surrender by bombing and killing thousands of people.

Winston Churchill got people to donate pots and pans. The people working for Winston made the pots and pans into shelters. Every family could buy the shelters but, they had to put it up themselves. They had to dig the shelter quite far into the ground but, if the dug the shelter too far down, the soil would become damp.

The Blackouts were when families had to turn all their lights out so enemy planes didn’t see the houses below. Families also had to have blackout blinds. These ARP wardens would warn us about the Blackout.

Barrage balloons are used if enemy planes pass by, they would get tangled in the barrage balloons string and crash. But the deadly doodle bugs wings have wire cutting wings. This is a barrage balloon.

Gas masks are to protect you from the gas made by bombs. They protect us by having a special chemical to clean the air with the gas in.

An ARP warden would have to wear a navy blue uniform with a hard helmet. An ARP would go round peoples houses to make sure they turn lights off. ARP wardens would come out at about 9:00 pm. An ARP warden would blow their whistle to tell people to turn their lights out.

The first V-1 was launched at London on 13 June 1944. The V1 was a pilotless bomb. The V1 was nicknamed the doodlebug. The doodlebug would fly over cities. V1(doodle bug) V2(advanced bomb

They went to the countryside were there were no bombs. Some children enjoyed their stay, when others were forced to work. Children were evacuated.

Glossary Evacuation - Evacuation was when children and pregnant women had to go out of the cities to safety. Blitz – Blitzkrieg is German for Lightning war.
