1 World War II: London Blitz
Ms. Corby

2 The London Blitz In September 1940, German war planes bombed London for many months. The German planes would fly in at night to bomb the cities. This was called an air raid. Many buildings were destroyed in London and the surrounding cities. The Germans gave up in May 1941.

3 How did people protect themselves?
Loud Air Raid Sirens- this warned people to find shelter. At night time a Blackout was enforced. This meant all sources of light had to be darkened. Windows and door had to be covered with heavy black curtains. All other lights were turned off. Without any light, the Germans had a harder time bombing the cities.

4 The Children Children living in the big cities, like London were sent to safe places in the countryside. 2 Million children were sent away to escape the bombing

5 Air Raid Shelters The shelters were built underground and made of steel. The shelters helped to protect people from the bombs. People slept in the subway tunnels during the night raids.
