2 Did You Know ? Poland was invaded by Germany on the 1st September. Two days later France and Britain join. Did you know that pilots would stick there head out the window to see planes behind them. In 1940 rationing starts in United Kingdom. Winston Churchill was born on 30th September 1847.

3 Spitfire The spitfire was made in July 1942. Before the spitfire was made they used Biro planes. The spitfire was not made for Rough times.

4 HAWKER HURRICANE In October 1939 the Hawker Hurricane was the first Royal Air Force plane to destroy a Luftwaffe plane. It was shot down over France However in the spring of 1940 Germany attacked France and 25% of all hurricane planes were destroyed by the Luftwaffe.(about 200 planes)

5 AVRO LANCASTER This plane has four engines. It was first used in ww2 in 1942. The Avro Lancaster was used as a night time bomber. This plane was used for special missions like the dam buster raids. The plane was modified to carry bouncing bombs to destroy dams in enemy territory.

6 MESSERSCHMITT BF 109 Entered service in the spring of 1947 Is an enemy fighter plane used by the Germans in the Blitzkrieg attack on Poland. It was also the primary fighter plane used in the Battle of Britain Has a maximum speed of 385mph.

7 UNEXPLODED BOMBS Bombs were falling all over London and UNEXPLODED BOMBS are as dangerous as any other bomb.

8 V1 bomb The V1 Bomb is also known as a doodle bug. The Germans started sending V1 bombs in June 1944. It looked like a small plane had no pilot. They made a loud droning noise and went silent when it ran out of fuel. They then fell to the ground and exploded.

9 BARRAGE BALLOON Barrage balloons where put up to force enemy planes to fly higher, so making their bombing aim less accurate.

10 GAS MASK Gas masks were given out to all homes and families by 1939 About 38 million gas masks were made. Gas masks were given just in case of a gas attack. Gas masks were never needed. There was even a special baby gas mask.

11 These three planes are used in the Battle of Britain Memorial flight.
