2. How were children kept safe during the War?

The British Government was determined to be ready for the expected heavy air-raids on its towns and cities. As well as digging lots of air-raid shelters for the public to use, they also decided to move over one million people away from the danger areas. This was known as evacuation and it changed the lives of many people forever. However when the bombs didn’t fall, parents took their children back home. There was another evacuation in 1940 when the Blitz began, and again in 1944 when Germany launched V1 and V2 ‘flying bombs’

Mothers usually went with children who were under school-age. School-age children went with their teachers. Parents were never told where there children were going. They just had to believe the government promises that their children would be well looked after.
Evacuation of children was not compulsory but it was compulsory for people in the countryside to accept city children into their homes. The government paid families 10s 6d (52.5 pence) a week for each evacuated child. Not all families wanted city children living with them and not all evacuated children wanted to be there.
