Keeping Children Safe Online

Home Network Filtering

Families can ask their network provider if they can provide home network filtering Some internet providers offer filters when browsing Google and YouTube both have ‘safe’ settings to block adult content Iphones, Ipods and Ipads can all be controlled by switching on the parental control switch – sites such as YouTube then can’t be viewed at all.

Agreeing Limits

Talk to your child about what limits you both agree on regarding the use of the internet and try and stick to them. It would be a good idea if your child handed in her mobile phone or device to you at an agreed time. Don’t assume that teenagers don’t always want total privacy from you with regard to their online activity.

Preparing students

There are definitely things online you don’t want your children to see. Letting your son or daughter know they can report things to you without fear of repercussion is really important. Honest and brave communication is the best way to tackle situations where children have seen something disturbing online.

Apps students love There are many apps around, which change all of the time. However, the main ones are:- Whatsapp Facebook messenger Snapchat Instagram Tumblr Ask fm is very sinister!!

How to set up Privacy functions Facebook In privacy settings tick ‘only friends’ to see my photos, see my interest and send me messages. Under search for me on Facebook tick friends of friends or friends and network - otherwise your profile is visible to everyone. Remember you can block someone you don’t want to contact you. Instagram Set ‘on’ for ‘posts are private’ Snapchat Set ‘who can send me snaps’ to my friends instead of everyone. To block a user go to ‘my friends’, select the name, choose edit and then ‘block’ WeChat In general phone location settings, select WeChat and choose ‘off’; for photos set visibility to ‘private’ Kik Choosing ‘ignore new people’ hides messages from unknown senders. Vine In ‘your content’ select ‘posts are protected’ to hide them from public view. Tumblr Blogs are public but you can ignore specific users to stop them from seeing or commenting on posts.
