2 What are the different types of social media?

3 Vocabulary App-An application: typically a small, specialized program downloaded onto mobile devices or an Ipad Screen shot-An action where an image is “captured” from the screen of a device and can then be stored or shared with other people (see “parent resources” for a link on more info) Tweet-Slang term to describe any information one posts or updates on their Twitter account Re-tweet-The act of forwarding or re-posting someone’s tweet (see parent resources for a link on more info) Facebook Wall-The area on the user’s profile page where they write comments, post pictures and communicate with other facebook users

The following slides describe the different types of social media being utilized by today’s youth. The descriptions outline the pros and cons of each site.

5 KIK KIK is an app. The name comes from the often mistyped version of “LOL” Users have the ability to message or chat for free Anyone can use and chat with someone as long as you have their username Negative: Users can make up anonymous names The sender can tell if the receiver has read their message Communications often lead to confusion and hurt feelings if the sender doesn’t get a response but knows their message was read

6 Twitter Online social network
Can be accessed through an app on smart phone, Ipod, Ipad or computer People can “retweet” another person’s posts People can follow anyone if privacy settings aren’t on Messages can be sent privately or on a public feed People can pretend to be others: follow “fake” celebrities

7 Ask.fm Social media site
Can be accessed online or through an app on an Iphone Senders are able to ask anonymous questions Inappropriate questions and responses are often posted People often get upset or offended by responses If an ASK account is deleted, the history and contents of the account can still be searched on the internet and is still viewable by ANYONE

8 Oovoo Free video chat and instant messaging site
Similar to face time or Skype Accessible through any device that has internet Users have the ability to block people Someone can screenshot you without being noticed or knowing it’s happening

9 Instagram Online social network
Accessible through an app on any smart phone, Ipod, Ipad or computer Originally designed to post pictures If not set on private, the WHOLE WORLD CAN SEE IT and comment on your pictures Not appropriate for children under 12 New update: Videos can also be posted

10 Snapchat An app where pictures and videos can be sent to anyone
Pictures and videos disappear in 1-10 seconds once they are received Snapchat story is the ability to send a picture or video and it stays on the receiver’s screen for 24 hours Tips: Pics and video images can be screen shot (see vocab slide for more info on screen shot) You are notified when someone screenshots your picture

11 Vine Commonly used app to share videos
People can make comments about the videos that are posted You can repost a video without permission Privacy settings can be set up so only your friends can see your videos

12 Facebook According to some students at Copper Beech , Facebook is more popular among adults nowadays People use this site to post and share pictures and videos Privacy settings require owner’s approval before people can access their wall You can connect with friends by instant messaging

Quick access to friends and family Ability to share information Networking Support from friends, get advice, share opinions Ability to socialize with friends and family who are far away Get news and information You can’t always be 100% sure who you are “talking” to Screen shotting Bullying Posting illegal activity Trash talking Publicizing confidential personal information Too much emotional information is shared in public view Identity theft

14 Age Restrictions KIK-Not intended for kids under 13-Parental permission expected for kids ages years Twitter-Does not require age input when you sign up Ask.fm-Users must be 13 years or older Instagram-Users must be 13 years or older Snapchat-Not intended for children under 13 Oovoo-Children under the age of 13 are not permitted to use software Vine-Recently increased their age usage to 17 years or older (from 12 +) Facebook-Users must be 13 years or older

15 Responsibility and Safety
What you post, send or share is PERMANENT Information that has been deleted can be retrieved Am I considering the feelings of the person I am writing about before I hit “send”? Even if you think something is private, chances are more people will be seeing it than you think (Screen shot) If you are having a bad day and post your feelings, be prepared to handle the positive AND negative comments you may receive If the school is made aware of a situation involving inappropriate conversations or behaviors on social media sites that cause a disruption to the regular school day or is impacting the student’s ability to learn, the school can investigate the situation and assign consequences

16 Sexting Pictures and videos are never “deleted”. They are permanent when they are shared, forwarded and/or screen shotted Don’t TRUST that the message, picture or video you send will remain private Most likely people will make comments about your photo that are unsolicited Pictures and videos can be used against the sender and sometimes is used as blackmail Sender, receiver and sharer of inappropriate pictures and/or videos of a sexual nature can be subject to laws under anti-child pornography

17 New York State Law for child pornography
Under New York law, it's a crime to persuade someone younger than 17 to engage in the making of a sexual or nude image, or to distribute or disseminate child pornography featuring someone younger than 17 It's also a crime to possess a nude or sexual depiction of someone younger than 16 For example, a teenager who shares a nude photo of a 14-year-old girl with his friends could be convicted for possessing and distributing child pornography. The friends could also be convicted of possession of child pornography
