1 CYBER- BULLYING

2 RECAP: What is Bullying?
Bullying is intentional, not an accident, where a bully hurts someone on purpose. Bullying is repetitive. This means that the bully hurts someone over and over again; it isn’t an incident that happens only once. In general, bullying is where one person acts like they have more power than another, and does whatever they can to hurt that person.

3 What is cyber- bullying?

4 Cyber-bullying.... Sending nasty s, SMS texts, photos, instant messages(IM) or making nasty phone calls etc... This may also take place on: Facebook iMessage MSN Online gaming FaceTime Blackberry Messenger Or a 100 other ways!

5 What does a ‘Cyber-Bully’ use?
In the past, a school bully would pick on someone face-to-face, perhaps send a nasty note, or at worst, ring you at home! However, in 2012, there are more ways to keep in touch than ever before ... It is also easier for a Cyber-Bully to hide behind a screen or keyboard and say things they would never dare say to your face! Just think of all the different ways you use to keep in touch with your friends. HOW MANY WAYS OF KEEPING IN TOUCH ARE CAN YOU THINK OF?

6

7 In fact, on today’s Smartphone, you can chat ‘face-to-face’, text, , send photos, group chat and even allow your friends to see exactly where you are on a map!

8 But what if you fall out with a friend?
That means your friends and family will be able to get in touch and know where you are 24 hours a day, 7 days a weeks ... Which is brilliant ... isn’t it? But what if you fall out with a friend? or What happens if your contact details (mobile number, address, user name etc...) get passed onto someone you don’t like?

9 Remember: All types of bullying are very serious and can cause lots of damage to the people involved.

10 What are online social networks?
There are lots of online social networks that let you chat with other internet users (1,800,000,000 people use them!). You create your own profile and user name and fill in a few details about your likes and dislikes. Once you’ve done that, you can add music, videos and photos to your profile that other people can comment on. You can also leave messages and comments on your friends’ profiles. They’re great when you want to chat, share photos and play games with your friends and other people interested in the same things as you. Social networks you may have heard of include: MySpace Facebook Twitter Bebo Flickr

11 Bullying on social networks
Sadly, some people use social networks to tease & bully others. Cyberbullies can: post abusive messages on your profile wall add rude comments to a picture you've uploaded put a video or photo on their own profile that make fun of someone and encourage their friends to send it to others Bullying on social networks can be tough to deal with, especially if a victim is being bullied by the same person at school. Because it often happens on your own computer, Smart Phone or iPod Touch, online bullying can be almost impossible to get away from. However, if you feel like you're being bullied on your personal profile, there are some things you can do.

12 Online friends If you’re getting bullied by a linked friend, block them or delete them from your list. You may have fallen out with someone, but think you may become friends again in the future. If this is the case, blocking them for a short time means you won’t see any comments they may make that might upset you. You can always unblock the same person later. If you’re getting bullied by someone and they try to become your friend online, you can refuse their friend request. After all, why would you want to chat online with someone you don't get on with in the real world?

13 Online privacy settings
Remember that most social networks let you control who can see different parts of your profile. For example, you might only want to let members of your family and your closest friends see your photo albums. You can even make your whole profile private. Doing this means no-one will be able to find it even if they look for your name in a search engine. To find out how to control your privacy settings, have a look around your profile homepage for a link to ‘safety tips’ or ‘privacy’.

21 Other general social media tips
If someone is bullying you on your own social profile page, you should: keep and save any bullying s or images you have been sent take a screenshot of any comments that are threatening, but then delete them so you don’t have to read them again make a note of the time and date that messages or images were sent, along with any details you have about the sender try changing your online user ID or nickname don’t reply to any bullying messages or get into any online arguments Don’t forget that anything you post online can be seen by anyone. This includes your parents, your friends or even your teachers! Use your common sense and think before you publish anything on your profile.

22 What about bullying using Instant Messenger on my iPod Touch or Smart Phone?
Cyber Bullying used to only be through a text, phone call or , but Smart Phones (and iPod Touch) have changed all that! Using 3G you can Instant Message, FaceTime, send pictures and access the internet from almost anywhere at anytime. Brilliant ... Or at least it should be. Instant Message downloads are free or come with the phone. You can now chat with friends and family 24-7. You can even run group chats, sending messages or videos to lots of people at the same time.

23 Instant Messenger (IM)
This can be through your Tablet PC (e.g iPad), your Smart Phone (e.g. iPhone or Blackberry), your 3G MP3 (e.g. iPod Touch) or your home computer! You may get rude messages on your instant messenger (IM) account (e.g. MSN / iMessage / Blackberry Messenger / Kik) from someone that you’ve agreed to be friends with. It can be a good idea to only add people you know in the real world to your instant messenger. Doing this means that you’re always sure that your IM friends are who they say they are. Even if you accept IM requests from people you only chat with online, it’s easy to block or remove anyone if things get nasty.

24 How do I block someone using iMessage?
Simple ... YOU CAN’T DO IT! It’s easy to block someone using SMS text messaging ... But iMessage is paired to your Apple ID account. The ONLY way to block someone is to change your Apple ID address ... Then update your account settings to this and then ONLY tell your true friends your new address! This is why it is SO important that you only give out important information to your real and trusted friends. Never give out personal details (or accept as ‘online friends’) people you don’t know or don’t really trust!

25 Can I block someone from other IM Apps, like Kik or MSN?
PHEW ... You CAN do this easily! No really, it is! Just Google the step-by-step instructions using a search like: “How do I block someone on Kik?” Up comes the answer: You can block any Kik user from sending you messages by going to: Settings  Privacy  Block Lists and then choosing their name from the list. They will NOT be informed that you have blocked them.

26 So, there are lots of ways to protect yourself in the virtual world ...
WHAT ARE THEY AGAIN? But if you feel that you are being bullied online, what else could you do?

27 What ELSE could you do? Tell someone adult (parents/teacher, friend)
Report to social networking site or the Instant Messenger company NEVER respond or retaliate! Try to ignore it. Save any information and print, so that someone can help you. This can be used as evidence. Remember, the best thing to do if you feel like you are being bullied is to talk to someone.  Even if you don’t think it’s bullying, if you tell someone, they can help you feel better.
