Renaissance Music 1450-1600

Life in the Renaissance The word renaissance literally means ‘rebirth.’ This was a time of great human creativity. Exploration Christopher Columbus Curiosity and Individuality Leonardo da Vinci Galileo Shakespeare

Music in the Renaissance Now music is done not just by monks, but church choirs made up of only males. Boys would sing the higher parts and men would sing the lower parts. These boys that would sing in church choirs were called Boy Sopranos

Josquin Desprez : was a Flemish composer during the Renaissance that wrote motets, masses, and secular vocal music. Born in Belgium, but lived his life in Italy working for dukes and the Pope.

The Madrigal The most important kind of secular music during this time was the Madrigal A madrigal is a piece of vocal music set to the words of a poem that is usually about love.

Instruments in the Renaissance Instrumental was still not as popular as vocal music, but it did become more important than in the middle ages. Instrument music was used most often for dancing. Many new instruments were invented during this time.

Lute- a Renaissance guitar

Shawm- a reed instrument like an oboe.

Recorder – small wind instrument that sounds closest to the flute

Sackbut- early form of a trombone

Cornett- early form of the trumpet

Viols- bowed string instruments in every size.

Regals- small portable pipe organs

Harpsichords- plucked string keyboard instrument
