Body Paragraphs The stuff in the middle!

Refresher… What are the parts of an introductory paragraph? What are the five types of hook? Define Background information. What can you tell me about the thesis statement?

Four Parts of a Body Paragraph Transition Topic Sentence Evidence Wrap Up

Transition A Transition sentence leading in from a previous paragraph to assure smooth reading. This acts as a hand off from one idea to the next. A compound sentence that addresses the previous paragraph and relates it to the new paragraph. Never a single word “First,” “second,” “third,” etc… “To begin with,” “Furthermore” “In conclusion,” etc…

Topic sentence A Topic sentence that tells the reader what you will be discussing in the paragraph. It introduces the next idea in your paper. MUST relate the new idea back to the thesis of the paper. How does this idea fit into your overall argument? Why are you including this point in your paper? How will this strengthen your stance?

Evidence Specific evidence and analysis that supports one of your claims and that provides a deeper level of detail than your topic sentence. Evidence should look at the argument from many view points. Who is affected by this topic? Can one person or group be affected in more than one way? Without support, your thesis is weak.

Wrap Up A Brief wrap-up sentence that tells the reader how and why this information supports the paper’s thesis. The brief wrap-up is also known as the warrant. The warrant is important to your argument because it connects your reasoning and support to your thesis, and it shows that the information in the paragraph is related to your thesis and helps defend it.
