Getting started… How do you know what your chapter wants or needs?

, Once you have figured out your chapter’s wants and needs, you must know Think About: What specific resources should chapters use and what is available? How to get there? EXIT STRAIGHT AHEAD

Scenario #1 You recently moved and joined a relatively new local NCMA chapter who wants to grow. You’re invited to a board of directors meeting and the board asks for your input on the following: - How to appeal to chapter membership? The chapter has recently seen an increase in new professional memberships, however the chapter base is mostly senior contracting personnel. - How to determine chapter objectives? The board would like to know your previous chapter’s wants and needs. In addition, the board would like for you to share how your chapter moved forward with their objectives. - Any lessons learned? If you could give one piece of advice to the board based on your previous chapter experience, what would it be?

So…how do you understand YOUR product line? How will you incorporate new products such as the Advancing Professionals Community or Women’s Forum? How do we fight the “that’s not how we do it here…” syndrome?

Scenario #2 Your chapter hosts an annual, one-day learning event. The format hasn’t changed in years. Attendees sit in a classroom style arrangement and listen to someone present on a topic. While it was once a very successful event, in recent years attendance has dropped, it’s become more difficult to recruit volunteers, and interest has diminished. Several chapter leaders believe the event should still be offered, because it’s a chapter “tradition.” As a new member of the chapter leadership team: What steps would you take to address this? What would you recommend?

Do you have a chapter plan moving forward? CHAPTER PLAN How should we provide these services? To Do List  Think of ways to formulate a chapter business plan.  Tie in the chapter business plan with chapter annual report requirements.  Tie in the chapter business plan with possible Graalman award.

Scenario #3 You are a chapter leader and have a new chapter president, who wants to focus on change in hopes of being considered for the Graalman award. What suggestions do you share with the chapter president and how do you address the following considerations? Which chapter services have provided the most value to members? How did you focus on recruitment and retention? What programs and ideas work best for your chapter? Identify best practices that have worked for your chapter. For example, how do you have a significant turnout at chapter events?

Thank you!
