Societal and Cultural Factors Affecting Participation and Provision in Physical Activity

 By the end of the lesson;  All students will know and understand the various factors that affect participation and provision  Most students will be able to explain the various factors that affect participation and provision  Some students will be able to explain the various factors that affect participation and provision using sporting examples Learning Objectives

 Many factors influence the reasons for participation;  Some sports being more popular at different times  Where in the country you live and the traditions that part of the country have are just a couple of reasons Popularity and Participation Levels

 Cultural influences  Activities in and out of fashion  Age  Facilities available  Access  Economic restraints and participation Population and Participation Levels

 An area may have a sport as part of its cultural heritage  Which sports are the following areas of the UK well known for; 1.Scotland - 2.Ireland - 3.Northern England - 4.Southern England - 5.Wales –  Write down as many as you can think of. Cultural influences

 Family traditions may encourage children in a particular sport.  Even to the detriment of other sports.  By focusing on one activity, there is a chance that talents for other sports are missed or overlooked. Billy Elliot Cultural Influences

 When success in new sports does occur the government may allocate more money for it.  This will also increase private sponsorship, which will allow the sport to raise the profile, standards and participation levels  Over recent years British Cycling have received increased funding due to their success at the Olympics. This has lead to sky getting involved and organising sky rides.sky rides

 Watch the video  What does cultural influences got to do with Great Britain winning the Gold at the 2002 Winter Olympics?  Write down your answer and discuss it with your partner. Curling

Great Britain Curling  At the 2002 Winter Olympics, the British Curling teams were solely made up of people from Scotland.  This was due to the long tradition of curling in Scotland.  In Scotland there are lots of Curling rinks and interest is very high.

 The popularity of an activity can change quickly as trends in sport fall in and out of fashion.  In June/July which sport increases in popularity due to a tournament being televised?  Discuss the answer with your partner. Activities in and out of fashion

 In the short term during Wimbledon weeks more people can be seen using local tennis facilities.  They are inspired by what they are seeing on TV.

Activities in and out of fashion  A more long term effect can come about due to a national side doing well in a major tournament.  This causes an increase in popularity in that sport.  This may encourage local councils to fund new facilities.  England winning the ashes and rugby world cup increased popularity and participation.

Activities in and out of fashion  If a minority sport begins to receive greater coverage on TV this will lead to an increase in its popularity.  In recent years snooker has gained in popularity, due to TV and big personalities.  This has inspired and attracted youngsters to the sport

Activities in and out of fashion  A sport could also decline in popularity with less people taking part.  Squash in recent years has taken a downturn.  Courts in local sports centres are now being adapted for trendier activities such as aerobics and yoga.

Age  The age of a person may influence their chances of taking part in certain activities.  There may be age limits for participating or joining of some clubs.  At most sports club each age group usually has its own section with coaches.  Certain age groups cannot play against others, due to governing body regulations.

 Having a healthier lifestyle continues to be trendy.  This means older people see the need to keep exercising, even though they may have injuries or find it difficult.  If older people do it properly there are only benefits to exercise.benefits to exercise Age

 Older people have the chance to learn new skills as lots of local sports centres cater for older age groups.  Money can sometimes be a problem for the older generation.  This is why concessions are made for older participants and off peak times are set aside for them.

1.Name 2 of the factors affecting participation and provision in physical activity 2.Which sports are traditional in Scotland? 3.What affect can family traditions have on young people when choosing sports? 4.Which sport sees an increase in popularity during the months of June and July? 5.How can age affect participation? Quiz

1.Age, Cultural influences, Activities in and out of fashion 2.Curling, Rugby Union, Football, Golf, Highland Games. 3.Family traditions may encourage children in a particular sport. Even to the detriment of other sports. 4.Tennis - Wimbledon 5.Money can sometimes be a problem for the older generation, they may have injuries or find it difficult. Quiz

Write a list of things you remember from last lesson  Cultural and Societal issues – what does this mean?  Sports in and out of fashion – why?  Age/Gender/Race/Religion – what about them?  Family traditions – how can this affect participation? Recap

Facilities Available  Write a list of as many sports facilities as you can think of in your local area?

Facilities available  The provision of indoor and outdoor facilities depends on many factors.  All areas of the country would like fantastic facilities but it just would not work due to the money it would cost.  The main factors are; 1.Location 2.Funding 3.Expected use and demand

Location  Certain sites suit particular activities.  Can you think of any locations that suit a particular activity?  Write as many as you can think of and discuss them with your partner.  Outdoor pursuit centres are near hills, lakes and forests. Plas y Brenin in Snowdonia is the National Mountain Center for WalesPlas y Brenin  Skiing is in the mountains  Rowing clubs by a river

Funding  Money to increase or improve facilities can come from different sources;  The government  The National Lottery  An individual or company may put money towards them

Expected use and demand  Whether its privately or publicly funded the aim is to have as many people use the facility for as much time as possible.  When deciding where to build new facilities there should be enough people who can make full use of it.

Access  In larger communities where facilities for certain activities are good there may be more chance that more people will participate.  The greater the participation the higher the standard, which then attracts more players and coaches.  In small communities there may be an interest but not enough people to make it viable.  Unless there is transport to towns with established clubs the opportunity to play is lost. Therefore they can or cannot access the activity they want

Economic constraints and participation  In order to participate in most sports there needs to be a certain financial commitment.  You have to pay!  Some sports are cheap to sustain, others are more technical and complicated.

Economic constraints and participation Write and list of the sport you think are cheap to sustain and those that are more expensive. CheapExpensive

Economic constraints and participation  There are some sports that are too expensive to finance and being a member of a club is the only way to take part.  Money to pay possible joining fees and annual subscriptions are required to join a club.  Equipment will need replacing, and updating as new innovations in that sport are made.

 Cultural influences  Activities in and out of fashion  Age  Facilities available  Access  Economic restraints and participation Population and Participation Levels

Task  Read the three comments coming up, they were made by keen and talented sports people  Study their problems  Think of possible ways they could overcome them and play the sport of their choice

“I want to play tennis but there are no facilities near by.”

“I can win against girls four years older than me, but I am too young to join my local club”

“Everyone says I am a talented rugby player, but my family are enthusiastic that I follow family traditions and play football”
