SA Economic Indicators for the month of July 2013 © 2013 Trade Intelligence SA Economic Indicators Employment COMMENTARY The official unemployment rate increased to 25.6% in Q2/2013 from 25.4% in Q1/2013, the highest rate in two years The labour force increased by persons, between Q1 and Q2 2013, reflecting a rise in the number of both unemployed persons and employed persons, and respectively In Q2 2013, both the formal sector and the informal sector saw an increase in employment ( and persons respectively), while employment decreased in agriculture and private households ( and persons respectively) Compared to a year ago, in Q2 2012, employment increased by 2% ( ) unemployment increased by 5.7% ( ). the number of discouraged work-seekers increased by 2.3% (54 000) other (not economically active) decreased by 1% ( ), resulting in a net decrease of 0.5% (79 000) in the not economically active population. The total number of employed people rose to 2008 levels reaching some 13.7 million but the numbers of unemployed and discouraged work-seekers rose to record levels, 7 million in total (4.7 million unemployed people and 2.4 million discouraged work-seekers) The economy is creating jobs but the number of jobseekers is rising at a faster rate Over the last two and a half years, South Africa’s official unemployment rate has averaged over 25% Note: StatsSA’s official definition of unemployment: Those between 15 and 64 years of age who are without work in the week preceding the interview, but who are looking for work and are available to take up employment or open a business.
