John Rafferty, Interpreter, IAABO 95, Lowell, MA Information in this presentation provided from:

Counts have been important throughout history……

Do you know these counts?

How about this one?

Or this one?

Counts are a NECESSARY & an INTEGRAL part of the game

- Based on the rule book and mechanics manual, they are required. - Other than seeing the clock, it’s the only way in which timing mistakes can be corrected (see Case Book ) - By counting, an official can accurately rule on violations (start and stop counts, as needed) Why do we count?

How many counts are there? Counts in High School Basketball

3 SECONDS VIOLATIONS

Three Second Mechanic

5 SECOND THROW-IN VIOLATION

Rule 9, Section 2, Article 4 “ Once the throw in begins, the ball shall be released on a pass directly into the court before 5 seconds have elapsed.” 5 SECOND THROW-IN VIOLATION

5 Second Throw-in Mechanic

5 SECOND CLOSELY-GUARDED DRIBBLE

Remember 4-4-4: Hold for 4 seconds Dribble for 4 seconds Hold for 4 seconds 5 SECOND CLOSELY GUARDED – HOLDING THE BALL

Rule 9, Section 10 – Articles 1, 2 and 3 Art 1 – A player shall not while closely guarded (6’ forward foot to forward foot) a – in his/ her frontcourt, hold the ball for five seconds or dribble the ball for five seconds b – in his/ her frontcourt, control the ball for five seconds in an area enclosed by screening teammates 5 Second Closely Guarded – Holding & Dribbling

Rule 9, Section 10 – Articles 1, 2 and 3 Art 2 – A closely guarded count shall not be started during an interrupted dribble Art 3 - A closely guarded count shall be terminated during an interrupted dribble PENALTY – The ball is dead when the violation occurs and is awarded to the opponents for a throw in from the designated out-of-bounds spot nearest the violation. 5 Second Closely Guarded – Holding & Dribbling

5 Second Closely-Guarded Mechanic

Rule 9, Section 8 “A player shall not be, nor may his/ her team be, in continuous control of a ball which is in his/her backcourt for 10 seconds” PENALTY – The ball is dead when the violation occurs and is awarded to the opponents for a throw-in from the designated out-of-bounds spot nearest the violation. (NOT AT DIVISION LINE!) 10 SECOND VIOLATION - BACKCOURT

1. Terminates when ALL three things reach the frontcourt: the left foot, the right foot and the ball 2. Terminates upon granting a time out or ruling a violation or foul – and a new 10 second count will begin (See references - Rule & Case Book 4.4.1) 3. If Team A achieves frontcourt status and the ball is deflected to the backcourt, a new count begins when the ball achieves backcourt status (when the ball touches the floor.) When does the 10 second backcourt count end?

- Count should be visible from the trail official - Starts when touched inbounds in the backcourt - Terminated when front court status is achieved (if ball is in flight on a pass from the back court to the front court – the ball still has back court status.) 10 SECOND VIOLATION - BACKCOURT

- Count should be initiated from trail official - Count should be visible, but not emphatic – starts at waist, toward thigh - Count starts when the ball is at the disposal of the free thrower - Count terminates when the ball is released on a try for goal 10 SECOND VIOLATION on the FREE THROW SHOOTER

Rule 8 – 4 The try for goal shall be made within 10 seconds after the ball has been placed at the disposal of the free thrower at the free-throw line. This shall apply to each free throw. (Rule was implemented to prevent game stalling.) 10 SECOND VIOLATION on the FREE THROW SHOOTER

The 10- second backcourt count should continue on a pass from A1 in the backcourt to A2 in the frontcourt until the ball touches A2 or the frontcourt. YES NO It’s too early in the season for this! Let’s test your knowledge…
