Some simple questions… Are the advantages really so obvious? –How many new jobs? –Security of energy supply? –Less pollution? –Global issues (climate, political,…) Why is the public perception of biomass sometimes so wrong? How to motivate relevant stakeholders?

Public Perception Croatia (2004): Which energy source is the cheapest?

Farmer John Wilmor, UK Wood fuel and short rotation coppice offers farmers like me a great opportunity to diversify away from traditional crops and practices where it is becoming almost impossible to make a living. Growing SRC gives me a product that I can market locally through a producer group (TV Bioenergy Coppice) that I am also a Director of and allows me to generate additional benefits. These benefits include better shooting revenues for game on the farm using the SRC as cover and improved leisure income as a result of a better managed and diversified farm. I am also very proud of the environmental benefits and increased biodiversity that is resulting from the Bioenergy activity. As a custodian of the land that I farm this is always a critical matter for me.

Some Mediterranean specifics... How many jobs we want / need? –Employment vs. Efficiency (Cost competitiveness) People as a valuable resource –Do we have them? –Do they want to be involved in biomass industry?

Biomass in Mediterranean = Rural Development People – the basis of all rural development Human dimension: out-migration, large percentage of elderly population, educational level, cultural identity, social structure Impact of urban lifestyle change (leisure activities, food consumption of the urban majority)

Broad Perspective Support to the traditional industries – additional incomes, activities, jobs,… New products for a global market (pellets, ethanol…) Contribution to a new image for existing and new activities (‘eco-tourism’) New industries (stoves, other equipment,…) Combination with traditional production and tourism – organic agriculture (‘healthy’ food),… Any combination of mentioned above!
