7 Sustainability and Prosperity in a globalizing world
What are the impacts of globalization on sustainability and prosperity?

8 Canada’s Sustainability Development Objectives
When we look at sustainability, prosperity, and globalization, we are often dealing with ______________ ________________. Sustainable development: development that meets the needs of the present without ____________ the ability of future. The perspectives of Canadian gov’t, business, developers, scientist, citizens and culture groups are rarely the same. Each goal shown in the diagram must be achieved in order for the others to succeed. Why is it important to look at all 5 goals when considering sustainability? Promoting Equity Improving our Quality of Life and Well-being Sustaining our Natural Resources -- Sustainable Jobs, Community, and Industries Protecting the Health of Canadians and of Ecosystems Meeting our International Obligations

9 What Sustainability Means to Canadians?
Voices, page 258 “A Canadian Environmental Perspective”–David Suzuki

10 Perspectives on Conservation
Many natural resources are finite, or limited. They are consumed faster than they develop, they can become depleted. When resources can no longer meet demand, alternatives are sought – however, alternatives are unavailable or in short supply. For many years, natural resources were not monitored. Canadians are becoming more concerned with conserving. Aboriginals were given special fishing rights that are protected by treaties. The cod industry in N&L stock was reduced due to over fishing, devastated the area economically. Aboriginal fishing also must be monitored for the purpose of conservation. Conservation plans are strategies to protect and preserve resources.

11 Sustainability and Prosperity in a Globalizing World

13 Food for All! Clean water, air, shelter, and food are the basic needs of life – poverty deprives people of these needs. Some believe in increasing farming and agriculture to provide food for the world. How does farming impact the environment? Farmers can practice sustainable farming techniques and non-sustainable avenues…harmful effects include effects of pesticides and fertilizers on soil, ground water, wildlife, and people.

14 Food for All cont’d Agribusiness – large-scale agricultural businesses. In order to feed growing populations, massive commercial farms clear land to grow crops specifically for markets in other parts of the world. What are some impacts of agribusiness? RMR: Rick’s Rant – Meat Recall Did you know it was all about the corn?

15 The Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD)
