 in 500 B.C. The people of Axum settled in the Ethiopian highlands, near the Red Sea. Good position for trade routes.  Ethiopia’s landscape ranges from desert areas to forested highlands  There are many mountainous regions in Axsum. Geography of Axum

Rulers & Government The first ruler of Axum was Zoskales in 100 AD. The kings ruled from 100 AD-715 AD. The titles of the kings indicate claims to rule over important Arabian Kingdoms. The government was a monarchy.

Economy of Axum  By 270 AD, Aksumite kings issued a gold coinage.  The rulers imported silver, gold, olive oil and wine, and exported luxury goods.  Traded with the Eastern Roman empire, Greece, Egypt, Africa, Arabia, and India.

Achievements Axum was the first Christian state in the history of the world. The Aksumites controlled one of the most important trade routes in the world and occupied one of the most fertile regions in the world. They accomplished styles of pottery making, ivory carving, glassware production, and metalwork in gold, silver, bronze, and iron.

Rise of the Axum Kingdom What forces lead to the rise of Axum? The kingdom of Axum was at the height of its power from AD. The Aksumite king Ezana I ( AD) assumed power when Axum was a strong and large empire. The king's main wealth and power came from his control of foreign trade.
