8.04 East Africa Live Lesson

Fight for Control Egypt wanted to take over the area of Nubia- Nubia had natural resources of gold and copper=$$$ for trade Egypt also struggled for power with Kush. While the two groups did trade they often thought that one would try to take over the other! – Both Egypt and Kush relied on the Nile River to water their crops

Compare them! Kush Traditional economy based on agriculture Strong Kingdom Traded and made a lot of $$ by smelting iron Paid tribute to Egypt Started Africa’s Iron Age Great location for trade (Near the Nile and the Silk Roads) Declined due to overuse of wood to smelt iron and iron wasn’t in abundance. Egypt Traditional economy based on agriculture Stronger Kingdom Traded goods and crops Forced Kush to pay tribute in an effort to keep Egypt for taking over BUT that didn’t work! Located near the Nile Took over Kush but couldn’t control them for long. Rulers would become weak and Kush fought back!

Axum Rise and Religion Axum looked to control the trade area of the Silk Roads on the Nile River and Red Sea to trade items like salt, gold, elephant tusks, silk, spices, etc. Axum king named Ezana made Christianity the official religion of the Axum Kingdom because he was converted by his childhood teacher who was Christian

What led to Axum’s Decline? Islamic invaders called the Almoravids came and seized trade city of Adulis. Used natural resources and didn’t replenish them Overused Soil and too much deforestation = cutting too many trees! Moved the capital between two mountains! – What’s good about that? What’s bad?
