 The role of leadership by the military’s definition is to  “Unify and Inspire”  “DIRECTING, MOTIVATING AND ENABLING OTHERS TO ACCOMPLISH THE MISSION PROFESSIONALLY AND ETHICALLY, WHILE DEVELOPING OR IMPROVING CAPABILITIES THAT CONTRIBUTE TO MISSION SUCCESS.”  CF DOCTRINAL DEFINITION Leadership Role

 Teamwork is based on the belief that the collective effort of the whole is often stronger than any single individual could achieve working alone.  Working with others is rarely easy.  - different personalities  - individual circumstances  - differing interpretations and expectations  Important to remain focused and keep team focused.  Aim to maximize productivity and minimize tensions Teamwork

 Humans are hard wired to help others – it’s in our DNA  You will have success if you ask for help instead of just telling someone to do a certain task  When you delegate something to one of the team you must ensure that they have a clear understanding of your intent and end result  Follow up to ensure that all is going as it should or if something has changed or they need help  Ensure that you acknowledge that person’s contribution – a thank you is such a simple thing but is most often overlooked Delegation

1.Be Patient; 2.Be adaptable and manage your expectations; 3.Recognize that actions speak louder than words; 4.Appreciate that perception is more important than reality; 5.Remember that the message sent is not always the message that is Received and it is the message that is received that is acted on; Ten Principles for Working with Others

6.See the world through the eyes of those with whom you are interacting; 7.Do not judge the behaviours of others and, instead, observe, learn and try to understand; 8.Always be respectful; 9.Deal with frustrations privately; and 10. Do not adhere to unrealistic standards.

Creating Effective Collaboration  State the project objectives in positive manner  Ask for team members to contribute to the tasks required based on their talents and time they are willing to give  Ask for help and input – “two heads are always better than one” Remember we are hard-wired to help.  Communicate with the team on an ongoing basis to ensure that all parties are on the same page  Follow Ten Principles of Working with Others
