Project overview LinkedUp Project: Wharfedale French and Spanish Community Reading Project

© Crown copyright 2011, Department for Education. This resource has been created through the LinkedUp Award Scheme. Before the project… We are a group of 8 primary schools in the Wharfe Valley in Yorkshire, working together for support and training to develop our expertise in teaching French or Spanish Almost all children from these schools transfer into only two secondary schools 6 of these 8 schools chose to participate in the LinkedUp Reading project

© Crown copyright 2011, Department for Education. This resource has been created through the LinkedUp Award Scheme. Outline of the Project The project transferred methodology from Key Stage One literacy acquisition into practice in upper Key Stage 2, by creating supported French or Spanish reading groups for year 5 and 6 children, which provided supportive and enjoyable opportunities to practise reading aloud with adult helpers. The project also aimed to raise the profile of reading in French or Spanish within the wider community.

Aims (1) To help children to achieve two of the year 6 literacy outcomes in the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages: Read aloud with confidence, enjoyment and expression, in chorus or individually Read and understand the main points and some detail from a short written passage

© Crown copyright 2011, Department for Education. This resource has been created through the LinkedUp Award Scheme. Aims (2) To show that the ability to read in another language is important, desirable and normal, by: involving parents as mentors involving Year 9 students as mentors involving the local public library service (story time and books on loan) including children’s workshops by French or Spanish authors in the local Literature Festival.
