10. Outcomes of initial phase Year 3 children are encouraged to write about a jungle animal drawing on the teaching from the initial phase. Year 5 children to develop sentences relating to a simple help desk scenario, to identify a suitable range of technical vocabulary, to change verbs into the imperative, and to use more formal language. Year 3 Joint foreign language and literacy – Adventure unit In this second teaching phase attention is focused on teaching the target language story as part of the Adventure and Mystery Literacy unit for year 3. Children are encouraged to examine the structure of the story and time connectives, and to engage in simple recounts.

Year 5 Joint foreign language and literacy lessons – ICT Instructions unit In this second phase of the teaching children are encouraged to decode target language instructional text drawn from the Microsoft Office Online Website, describing how to cut and paste text. They are also exposed to a fictional help- desk scenario whereby English speakers are obliged to communicate with a foreign help desk. (See Help Desk Scenarios in Whiteboard Resources section).
