Reading P4-7 Noblehill Primary School Information Session for Parents 31 January 2017

2 Elements of Reading Core Reading – there will be more of an emphasis on the teaching of reading and less the hearing of reading Writer’s Craft – understanding the author’s use of language through reading and making the connection with writing ‘Reading for Enjoyment’ is a very important element in teaching children to read – focus for home learning ‘Reading for Information’- a skill which permeates the whole of the curriculum

3 Core Reading from P4 to P7 Core readers are kept in school
Teaching reading , not merely hearing reading There is a maximum number of ability groups per class Pupils in each group have similar abilities Pupils with additional support needs will continue to have their individual needs met and in addition will be included in group work There are three sessions per week Each session lasts approximately 45 minutes

4 Core Reading from Primary 4 to 7
Children will: be trained in sustained reading using chapter books/longer texts use texts at a ‘readable’ level – it’s what you do with the texts that is important work on each book for 3-4 weeks; use a variety of Genre including non-fiction, poetry, play scripts etc [also classic novels] spend focused teaching time doing guided reading in the classroom using the core reader use a variety of levelled materials by different publishers rather than simply working through a ‘scheme’.

5 Core Reading from P1-3 Children will:
continue to bring reading books home for consolidation and fluency practice be taught reading skills every day, including fluency, comprehension, word recognition and spelling work in groups with pupils of a similar ability As the pupils develop their reading skills, they will be given increasing opportunities to read both – independently and silently

6 Core Reading from P4-7 Children who are still struggling with the mechanics of reading will: Continue to bring a levelled book home for reading aloud practice Regularly read aloud to an adult in school Possibly receive targeted support from ASL staff

7 Writer’s Craft Teaching the author’s use of language through reading
Making the connection with writing No right or wrong answers – it is about the children: Talking about texts Giving opinions Justifying answers

8 Reading for Enjoyment Give it the importance it deserves!
A very important element of Reading IN THE CLASSROOM Silent Reading Pupils’ own choice of texts and genre Teacher reads too as a good example Regular and at a set time Average of 15 – 20 minutes Magazines, joke books can also be on offer Sometimes read to a friend or tell them about what you are reading Read to the children All stages Mixture of genre Short stories and longer novels to build suspense Regular and at a set time Invite others to read Make the time!

9 Reading for Enjoyment at Home
Parents: You cannot force children to ‘read for enjoyment’ at home – you can only encourage them. Set a good example Share the enjoyment of reading with your child Ensure that a variety of reading materials are available Teachers will: provide access to appropriate reading for enjoyment materials through accelerated reading and class libraries check and encourage children to record their personal reading in their reading diary regularly discuss personal reading with children during the reading session in school

10 Reading for Information
Key Skills: forming research questions using a table of contents and glossary interpreting text, illustrations and diagrams notetaking skimming scanning alphabetical order finding a main idea finding supporting detail organising material/information relating/presenting information selecting books according to a classification system

Teaching Process: teacher models the process initially using big books or shared texts Independent and collaborative work pupil focus in on text with a purpose in mind Develops good listening skills allows for sharing of prior knowledge all children have a role to play so there is no ‘opt out’
