WHAT IS IT?  The social learning theory emphasizes the importance of observing and modeling the behaviors, attitudes, and emotional reactions of others. Thus it focuses on learning by observation and modeling. The theory originally evolved from behaviorism but now includes many of the ideas that cognitivists also hold; as a result it is some times called social cognitive learning. THE THEORIST Albert Bandura was born in 1925 in Alberta, Canada. He developed appreciation for psychopathology of everyday life, thus he received his bachelors’ degree in Psychology from the University of British Columbia in Albert went on to the University of Iowa, where he obtained his Ph.D. in It was there that he came under the influence of the behaviorist tradition and learning theory. In 1953, he started teaching at Stanford University. While there, he collaborated with his first graduate student, Richard Walters, resulting in their first book, Adolescent Aggression, in He became the president of the American Psychology Association (APA) in 1973, and received the APA’s Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions in At 80 years of age, Professor Bandura continues to research and teach at Stanford University.

PROS & CONS Pros:  Puts the “person” back into personality  Explains how social influence has a major role in children’s lives, which can be shaped from their parents, teachers, media, etc.  Explains a large number of behaviors that occur in children Cons:  Ignores conscientiousness  There are situational influences  Does not explain all behavior  Based on inferrences which can’t be tested  Drives / needs / wants

WHERE DOES THIS FIT IN TO H.T.M.?  Social learning theory applies to everyday activities…  Involves symbolic thought based on actions.  Uses Self-regulation (professionalism).  Keep behaviors based on emotion.  Acquire, maintain, and modify behaviors that we see others perform.
