In 1803 Napoleon Bonaparte, the emperor of France, needed money to build his army to conquer Europe

The United States had wanted to buy the city of New Orleans for a long time so they had negotiators in Paris, France

When Napoleon learned that America wanted to buy New Orleans for $ 5 million he offered the whole Louisiana territory for $ 15 million

That was over 500,000,000(828,000 mi² or 2,100,000 km²) acres of land for about 3 cents an acre. It included land that went from Louisiana all the way to Montana in the Rocky Mountains

President Thomas Jefferson thought that it was a great opportunity for his country so he said, “yes” to Napoleon

President Jefferson was so excited about the new territory that he wanted to send a team to explore it. He chose Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to lead the expedition.

Lewis and Clark were to explore the new territory all the way to the Pacific Ocean

Lewis and Clark began their journey on May 14 th The journey took over two years. They finally returned on September 23 rd, 1806

Texas was a state in Northern Mexico. Many Americans moved to Texas to get free land

Mexicans were mad at the Americans because they brought their slaves to Texas and didn’t follow the Catholic religion

The Mexican president Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna sent soldiers to Texas to make the Americans obey Mexican laws

In American soldiers fought the Mexican army at a place called the Alamo in San Antonio, Texas. All the Americans were killed

After the Alamo, the Americans fought the Mexican general Santa Anna again. As they fought the Americans cried, “remember the Alamo” This time the Americans won and said that Texas was an independent country.

In the Compromise of 1850, California was admitted as a free state and the Utah and New Mexico territories were allowed to decide on their own if they wanted slavery or not.

A secret network known as the Underground Railroad helped many slaves escape from slavery and brought them to the North and also into Canada. One of the most famous “conductors” was Harriet Tubman.

One of the most famous abolitionists in Kansas was John Brown. John Brown believed that God had called on him to rid the country of slavery by force. In all over 200 people would die in the violence.

Over the next few years the free North and slave South continued to argue about slavery. On October 16, 1859 John Brown and his followers captured a federal arsenal hoping that this would cause a slave uprising.
