How did the expansion of the United States affect people inside and outside the country?

2 6.1 Introduction United States was Atlantic to Mississippi River
Expanded westward Claiming territories Lands west of the Mississippi were claimed by several nations Americans thought they had a right to the land Land was annexed to the United States Agreements Wars There were a variety of consequences from expanding

3 16.2 The United States in 1783 United States gained most of the land that stretched from the colonies to the Mississippi after the war Settlers started to move onto this land Previously only settled by American Indians Some wanted to continue farther Everyone wanted land Spain controlled Florida France had west of the Mississippi River Spain had farther West Mexico had some large territories Texas, Southwest, and California Great Britain controlled the Northwest Oregon and Washinton Russia had some Northwest territories

Expanding population from immigrants Settlers wanted farmland Businesses wanted resources and places to sell Leaders wanted to be strong and powerful Believed it was their right to spread Religion Government Way of life Manifest Destiny

5 16.3 Louisiana Purchase First land added to the United States
Louisiana Purchase in 1803 Land between Mississippi River and Rocky Mountains Bought from France Gave access to river and New Orleans port for transporting goods and trading France owned New Orleans Jefferson offered $10 million for the city France willing to give up land for $ to prepare for war with Great Britain Offered to sell all of Louisiana Territory for $15 million

6 16.3 Louisiana Purchase The land doubled the USA
Provided the settlers with a place to force Native Americans Created reservations in Oklahoma Government forced Southern Native Americans onto the reservations Many died on the trip to the reservation

7 16.4 Lewis and Clark Expedition
President Jefferson established an expedition to explore the territory before the purchase Meriwether Lewis and William Clark led The purpose was the map the new territory and find a Northwest Passage Set off along the Missouri River and wintered with the Mandans Met Sacagewea, a Shoshone woman, who joined the group She helped them reach the Pacific Ocean which led to people starting to move even farther west

8 16.5 Florida Acquisition Spanish controlled the land we now know as Florida Americans wanted this land Georgians were losing escaped slaves to Florida Became members of American Indian tribes Seminoles would attack and raid settlements in Georgia General Andrew Jackson attacked the Seminoles and captured two Spanish forts in Florida Not approved by President Monroe But not stopped Spain gave Florida to the U.S. and the U.S. gave $5 million to the settlers for damage By 1830, Americans had taken over Florida After one more war, the Seminoles were either dead of forced into the West

9 16.6 Texas Annexation Spain controlled Mexico and most Southwestern parts of the current U.S. Mexico gained independence Controlled the land including Texas Mexico wanted settlers to control the land instead of American Indians Offered free land to all Americans Obey Mexican laws and become Catholic Americans outnumbered Mexicans Caused tension Slavery nationality Mexico created a law stopping Americans from settling in Texas

10 16.6 Texas Annexation 1833, Texas asked Mexico’s permission to have their own government Mexico refused 1835 battles broke out between Texans and Mexican soldiers Texas declared independence in 1836 A group of 200 Texans and Americans tried to stand up to a Mexican army at the Alamo! When asked to surrender, they fired a cannon After 10 days, the Mexicans took the church Most Americans were killed

11 16.6 Texas Annexation Texas formed its government during the battle
Sam Houston was the president General Houston led a surprise attack on Antonia Lopez de Santa Anna and captured him Let him go on condition that they were granted independence Republic of Texas was formed Ruled itself for 9 years until President John Tyler let them become a state in 1845

12 16.7 Acquisition of Oregon County
Americans always hoped to control Oregon Country Great Britain and the United States shared this area Russia controlled Alaska President James Polk vowed to gain control of the land all the way to the Alaskan border Including British controlled territory Neither side wanted to fight Britain gave up claim to land south of 49° latitude Hurt American Indians living in this land Let to many wars between settlers and indians

13 16.8 Mexican Cession and Gadsden Purchase
Mexican War Mexico wanted Texas back The United States also wanted more Mexican land Debates about Texas border President Polk sent an army to protect the Rio Grande Mexicans defended it, killing Americans Polk declared war Americans were torn

14 16.8 Mexican Cession and Gadsden Purchase
Mexican War lasted for 2 years U.S. started strong Mexico would not surrender Even though their capitol was captured Finally Mexico surrendered Treaty of Gaudalupe Hidalgo U.S. got the Mexican Cession and Rio Grande border U.S. paid $15 million to Mexico Congress bought Gadsden purchase from Mexico in 1853 for $10 million Settlers moved to new land forcing American Indians to reservations
