Teen drivers, What is YOUR responsibility? Jackie Stackhouse Leach Health Educator Morristown Medical Center Jefferson High School Seniors October 21, 2013

What you have been taught! Teenagers are at the highest risk for Car Crashes! Even over the elderly population. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for young people in New Jersey and across the nation between the ages of 16 and 20 In 2009, in New Jersey, 34 teen drivers and 8 teen passengers lost their lives in crashes involving teen drivers. In 2010, 19 teen drivers and 14 teen passengers tragically lost their lives in these crashes. Everyten minutes a teen crashes in New Jersey. In 2009, there were 47,960 crashes involving teen drivers between 16 and 20 years of age. Seatbelt use among teens is the lowest for any age group. Moremale drivers than female drivers are involved in teen crashes. A greater amount of teen crashes occur in May than any other month and on a Friday than any other day of the week

Why are you at such a risk of having a fatal vehicle crash? 1.Overconfident and “it cant happen to me” attitude 2.Failing to wear your seat belt 3.Talking on a cell phone or texting 4.Speeding 5.Impaired driving 6.Passenger Distractions 7.Driving at night 8.Failure to anticipate potential dangers 9.Ignoring car maintenance

Where are you now with the New Jersey GDL program? NEW JERSEY’S GRADUATED DRIVER LICENSE PROGRAM FOR FIRST TIME DRIVERS PERMIT STAGE A. SPECIAL LEARNER’S PERMIT REQUIREMENTS Be at least 16 years old Obtain consent of a parent or guardian Enroll in an approved behind-the-wheel driver training course Pass the knowledge and vision test B. EXAMINATION PERMIT REQUIREMENTS Be at least 17 years old Obtain consent of a parent or guardian Pass the knowledge and vision test Practice supervised driving for at least a 6 month period of time LICENSE STAGE A. PROBATIONARY LICENSE REQUIREMENTS Be at least 17 years old Pass the MVC road test Practice unsupervised driving for at least a 12 month period of time B. The letter must include signature, title, address and telephone number of the designated official. PASSENGERS NO MORE THAN ONE (1) PASSENGER Unless the teen is accompanied by a Parent/Guardian or the passengers are the driver’s dependents (children) GDL DECAL REQUIRED Placement on Front and Rear License Plates (Removable) $4 a pair available at Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) locations throughout New Jersey ELECTRONIC DEVICES NOT ALLOWED No use of cell phones (handheld or hands-free), iPods etc. SEATBELTS REQUIRED PLEA BARGAIN AGREEMENTS BANNED Effective September 17, 2008, the Attorney General banned municipal prosecutors from offering plea agreements to all GDL holders.

Full Licensure At 18 years of age: 1. New Jersey lifts the nighttime driving restriction and passenger restrictions Your feeling kind of FREE???????

BUT your 18 years old now! No more Calling Mom and Dad to help you out of a ticket. No more thinking about oh, I'm only 17, they cant put me in jail Guess what?

Love being 18 It is all on you now! If you get a ticket, points add up to money on your Insurance If you don’t have your passengers buckling their seat belt EVERY TIME, you get the $46 fee for the first offense and you will also pay the court fees  Allow three friends in your vehicle and not wear their seat belt, get caught…$138 plus court fees

And finally, How about the passenger ? The passenger has the ability to help the driver. They can assist in looking both way and watching other vehicles. The passenger can also minimize distractions! Passenger is so important to a driver! Be a good role model and be a good passenger! Be safe! You too can help prevent a car crash.
