1 CH 3 GRADUATED DRIVER LICENSING PROGRAM Illinois Rules of the Road

2 Permit Phase- Age 15 Consent from parent/guardian Must be enrolled in driver ed class & pass written exam Must observe curfew Sun-Thurs 10pm-6am; 11pm – 6am Must hold permit for at least 9 months Must practice at least 50 hrs including 10 nighttime hours with parent/guardian or other licensed adult (21 or older)

3 Permit Phase – Age 15 Cannot get any tickets or other driving convictions during 9 month permit phase Number of passengers limited to 1 in the front and 2 in the back seat Everyone must wear their seatbelts Cannot use a cell while driving Permit is good for 2 years

4 Initial Licensing Phase- Ages 16-17 Must practice a minimum of 50 hrs including 10 nighttime hours Parent/Guardian must provide written consent to obtain a driver’s license Must have completed driver education class Must observe curfew Must remain conviction free at least 6 months before turning 18 years old

5 Initial Licensing Phase- Ages 16-17 No cell phones Must wear seat belts Until turns 18, only one passenger can be under 20 years old unless is a sibling- after 12 months have passed passenger requirements change to 1 in the front, 2 in the back OR think of it like this; THERE MUST BE A SEATBELT FOR EACH PASSENGER IN THE VEHICLE!

6 Full Licensing Phase- Ages 18- 20 No age related restrictions No Cell phones

7 New Laws Any person under the age of 21 license will be suspended for 3 months if caught with alcohol, drinking alcohol, purchasing alcohol or has a receipt indicating has purchased alcohol! If convicted, you get an additional 1 year suspension of driving privileges

8 More New Laws Parents/Guardians can have access to their child’s (Under 18) driving records and can access them free online Parents/ Guardians can request that a minor child’s driver’s license privileges be cancelled until the age of 18. If you receive a ticket, you can get court supervision (instead of a conviction) if your parent/guardian comes to court with you & you go to traffic school
