TRINATIONAL SARDINE FORUM Since th ANNUAL MEETING Otolith workshop Sumner Auditorium,SIO TPC, Southwest Fisheries Science Center La Jolla, California, U.S.A December 8-10,

Temperate Coastal Pelagic Species Habitats

Origin of the TSF  The TSF was proposed during Sardine Symposium, May 23-25, 2000 held at SIO, coordinated by Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission, SWFSC, SIO, and DFO, Canada to implement and coordinate coast wide data collection for sardine stock assessment, to exchange information and keep a breast of trends in the fishery.  The first TSF was held on Nov 29-Dec 1, 2000 in Ensenada, B.C. Mexico

TSF Mission Statement  The TSF (since 2000) comprising participants from government, academia, and industry of US, Mexico, and Canada strives to collaborate in improving coast-wide stock assessment: sampling for age, size composition, reproductive state, regional biomass estimates, stock structure, development of a common data base, following industry trends and issues and understanding of the role of sardine in the ecosystem.

Main sessions of 2011 TSF  Regional sardine fisheries reports  Research plans and reports  Special session: The national management strategies  Focus issue: July 2012 coast-wide sardine survey  Three working groups: –Regional biomass –Stock structure –Industry trends and issues

Organizers of TSF since 2000  : John Hunter, Tim Baumgartner, Kevin Hill, Orlando Amoroso and others  2005-present:Executive committee: Sharon Herzka (Mexico), Nancy Lo, Robert Emmett (U.S.), and Jake Schweigert (Canada) to take turns to organize the annual forum, rotating among locations/and/or countries. The local logistic arrangement committee varies from year to year

TSF since 2000  Trinational sardine symposium, May 23-25, 2000 at SIO, La Jolla  2000: The 1st TSF in Ensenada, Nov 29-Dec 1  2001: The 2 nd TSF in San Diego, Nov  2002: The 3 rd TSF at San Pedro headquarter of S. Ca Comm. Fishing Asso, San Pedro, Dec 5-6  2003: The 4 th TSF at San Pedro head quarter,…,Dec 4-5  2004 : The 5 th TSF with CalCOFI conference, La Jolla, Nov 18  2005: The 6 th TSF in Ensenada, Nov 14 and 15 th  2006: The 7thTSF in Vacouver, BC, Canada,Dec 1-3  2007: The 8 th TSF in San Diego, CA, Nov 29 and 30 th  2008: The 9 th TSF in Astoria, Oregon, Dec 4-5  2009 : The 10 th TSF in La Paz, Mexico, Nov  2010: The 11 th TSF in Victoria, Canada, Nov  2011: The 12 th TSF in La Jolla, Dec 8-10  2012: The 13 th TSF in Astoria, Oregon, Dec  …

Committees of the 12 th TSF  Program committee:   Nancy Lo, SWFSC, Sharon Herzka, CICESE, Timothy Baumgartner, CICESE, Robert Emmett, NWFSC and Jake Schweigert, DFO  Logistic committee:   Russ Vetter, SWFSC, Diane Pleschner-Steele, CWPA, Anne Allen, Stephanie Schott, and Jenny McDaniel, SWFSC

Contributors to the 12 th TSF   California Wetfish Producers Association

Have a fruitful TSF

Focus issue: Coast-wide survey in 2006  Proposed at the 1 st TSF in 2000, to improve coast-wide stock assessment of Pacific sardine  Reiterated at the 2003 TSF by the regional estimate WG  Emphasized at the 2005 TSF to plan a survey in April, 2006
