LEQ: How can I derive meaning from a variety of media that I watch, hear, & read? Digital Switch Over. May BBC.Movie Theatre. Myblogs.com. 14 Jan. 2010

Media literacy helps students develop a critical understanding of mass media. It helps students to understand how media is organized to make meaning, and how students can best create their own media products (Media Literacy Resource Guide, Ministry of Education Ontaria, 1997)

encourages people to ask questions about what they watch, hear, and read… –on TV –on the Internet –on the Radio –in the Movies –in newspapers, magazines, and books

Does the medium I’m reading or watching contain bias and/or propaganda that are trying to influence my thoughts?

… opinions of journalists and news producers within the mass media, in the selection of which events will be reported, and how they are covered, in order to influence others.

Journalists/News stations accused of bias: Fox News (Republican views) The Rachel Maddow Show (Democrat views) The Bill O’Reilly Show (Republican views) The Keith Oberman Show (Democrat views)

the attempt to manipulate people’s opinions, beliefs, and actions with words and images through the mass media

One of the great manipulators of propaganda were the Nazi’s during the Holocaust of WWII. National History Day Documentary: The Use of Propaganda and the Rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party National History Day documentary that placed first in the 2008 Arkansas State History Day Competition and competed in the national competition in Washington DC. Hitler's Use of Propaganda Hitler's Use of Propaganda

Types of Propaganda found in the Media: Transfer…links authority of something well respected, such as religion, to someone or something we should accept Bad Logic…events are deliberately manipulated to promote an idea that isn’t true Glittering Generality…links a person to a positive symbol so that people will believe the person is good. Plain Folks…attempt to convince the audience that a prominent person and his ideas are just like “regular” people Testimonial…a famous public figure promotes a political candidate

Media Literacy…questions you should ask…before you believe!!!! Who created or paid for the message? For what purpose was it made? Who is the target audience? What do they want me to think or do? Where might I go to get more information?
