LATITUDE & LONGITUDE

Latitude and Longitude The earth is divided by lots of imaginary lines called latitude and longitude.

Lines ► Longitude lines run north and south. ► Latitude lines run east and west. ► The lines measure distances in degrees. Longitude Latitude

Where is 0 degree Latitude? ► The equator is 0 degree latitude. ► It is an imaginary belt that runs halfway point between the North Pole and the South Pole. Equator

Where is 0 degree Longitude? ► The prime meridian is 0 degrees longitude. This imaginary line runs through the United Kingdom, France, Spain, Western Africa, and Antarctica. PRIME MERIDIAN

The Earth can be divided into hemispheres (half a sphere) at the equator and prime meridian

Adding additional lines of Latitude and Longitude forms a grid

On a World map, the grid looks like this

Latitude, always given first, measures distance north or south of the Equator

Longitude, always given last, measures distance east or west of the Prime Meridian

Let’s practice what we have learned. Which ship is located at 5° S 15 ° W ?

Ship #1 seems to be located 5 ° South of our Equator?

It is 15° west of our Prime Meridian

Ship #1 is located at Latitude 5° S Longitude 15 ° W ?

See if you can determine the latitude/longitude of the other 9 ships. Record your answers on the handout provided

It may be helpful to highlight your Equator and Prime Meridian, as they will always be your starting points. Draw a Compass Rose to help you with directions.
