Politics before Presidency  Ran for Illinois Legislature  Lawyer  U.S. Representative

Presidency  Inaugurated as president in March 1861  Following this, seven states seceded from the Union  Selected a strong cabinet that included all of his major rivals

Important Achievements  Emancipation Proclamation  Saving the Union and freeing the slaves  Gettysburg Address (Nov. 19, 1863)

Assassination of Lincoln  Killed by John Wilkes Booth  Attending a theater show  Shoot from behind, in the head  His killer was never found

Conclusion  The most important thing that Lincoln accomplished was saving the Union and freeing the slaves
