5 Lincoln’s Life: Childhood Abraham Lincoln was born in a log cabin in Hardin County, Kentucky to Thomas Lincoln and Nancy Hanks Lincoln. When Abraham was 9 years old, his mother died of milk sickness and the event was devastating on him. Here’s Abraham’s childhood home. Click the picture to go on to adult life.

6 Lincoln’s Life: Adult Life At six feet four inches tall, Lincoln was someone that was not easily missed on the streets of Macon County, Illinois. He moved to New Salem, Illinois where he worked as a shopkeeper, a postmaster, and a general store owner. Click the picture to go on to learn about Lincoln’s family!

7 Lincoln’s Life: Family Life In 1840, he met a high-spirited, well- educated woman from Kentucky named Mary Todd. They eventually married on November 4, 1842. The couple had four children. 8 Power in Presidency: Start in Politics Abraham Lincoln began his political career in 1834 when he was elected to the Illinois state legislature. He continued his political career by serving a single term in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1847 to 1849. He lost FIVE elections before he was successful. 9 Power in Presidency: Election! Lincoln joined the Republican Party in 1856. Though Abraham Lincoln felt African Americans were not equal to whites, he believed the America's founders intended that all men were created with certain inalienable rights. In 1860, Lincoln faced his friend and rival, Stephan Douglas, this time besting him, receiving not quite 40 percent of the popular vote, but carried 180 of 303 Electoral votes. 10 Power in Presidency: War Amongst Brothers The Civil War began in 1861 and lasted until 1865. It began because of slavery. The Union was fighting the Confederate States of America The Union wanted to abolish it, but the Confederacy needed slaves to work on their plantations. Lincoln supported the Union and authored the Emancipation Proclamation, freeing all the slaves. Here is a picture of the Emancipation Proclamation, the document that freed slaves. 11 Devastating Death: How and Why Abraham Lincoln was at a theater when he was shot in the head with a gun from behind. The shooter was a Confederate secret agent who did not think that the Civil War was over This is a picture of the gun that shot Lincoln. Click the gun to go on.

13 Devastating Death: Forever in our Hearts Lincoln’s legacy is every where: pennies, five-dollar bills, the Lincoln Memorial, books, and Presidents’ Day just to name a few.
