Name:_________________________________ Day:____ Period: _____ Do you know how many people smoke or use smokeless tobacco? 1.35 billion people smoke worldwide (1 out of every 3 people) 7.6 million Americans use smokeless tobacco

Statistics Smoking: 1,000 people younger than 18 years old become regular smokers everyday 5 million deaths per year in the world caused by smoking 443,000 deaths per year in the U.S. It costs the U.S. more than $75.5 billion every year A pack a day = $30.00 a week, which = $1,600 a year Smokeless: 35,000 people are diagnosed with oral cancer every year 7,500 die from oral cancer annually 59% of all oral cancer patients are alive after five years after diagnosis

FACTS ABOUT TOBACCO You must be 18 years old to legally buy and use tobacco products. Tobacco comes from a plant that naturally has the drug nicotine in it. Nicotine is very addictive, and it tricks the brain into wanting even more tobacco. Smoking tobacco: Cigarettes, cigars, and pipes. Smokeless: Snuff and chewing tobacco When these products are made, poisonous and cancer- causing chemicals are added.

REASONS FOR USING TOBACCO Stress To fit in Family problems THE PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF TOBACCO (for both smoking and smokeless tobacco) ______________________ After using tobacco just a few times, you will develop: bad breath, yellow teeth, and reduced ability to smell and taste. You can also develop mouth infections and it will be harder to breathe and be active. After using tobacco for a long time, you can develop: coughs, face wrinkles, yellow stained fingers, lung cancer, mouth cancer, gum disease, heart disease, and lung disease (emphysema).

THE NON-PHYSICAL EFFECTS OF TOBACCO You can get in trouble with the law. Most kids are under 18 years old when they try smoking the first time. Today, approximately 85% of teenagers do not regularly smoke, and an even greater number of teens and adults don't use smokeless tobacco. Your grades may affected because you are too busy trying to find places to smoke where you won't get caught. That means, you don't have to use tobacco products to be "popular", and that 's a good thing! You will be dismissed from a sports team if you are caught smoking, drinking, or using any other drugs. Smoking is a “gate-way” drug, which can lead to experimenting with more drugs.

Secondhand Smoke A lit cigarette burns for about 12 minutes. Environmental Secondhand Smoke: tobacco smoke that is inhaled involuntarily or passively by someone who is not smoking. Contains more chemicals such as: tar, nicotine carbon monoxide, ammonia and benzene than the inhaled smoke by a smoker. It is the most hazardous form of indoor air pollution. It can cause lung cancer and increases the risk of developing heart disease and respiratory problems. Second-hand smoke increases the risk for ear infections, bronchitis, and pneumonia.

Ways to Quit Using Tobacco Products There are several different ways a person can quit using tobacco products. But you should always consult with a doctor first, to make sure it is safe. A person can quit just “cold turkey”: This is when someone just decides to quit on their own. They use a lot of “substitutes”, such as gum, lollipops, sunflower seeds, etc. They also rely on their family and friends for support. A person can buy a product to help them quit: Nicotine patch, nicotine gum, “fake” cigarettes A person can go to a holistic doctor to get treatment.
