TOBACCO Name:_______________________ Day:____ Period:____ Trimester: _____ 1

TOBACCO Tobacco is a plant that naturally has the drug nicotine in it. Nicotine is a highly addictive stimulant. It is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. Nicotine is as addictive as heroin or cocaine, making it extremely difficult to quit. Addiction is an urge to do something that is hard to control or stop. Your body needs the substance in order for it to function properly. A stimulant speeds up the body and brain. 2

TOBACCO You must be 18 years old to legally buy and use tobacco products. 2 forms: smoking and smokeless Smoking tobacco: cigarettes, cigars, pipes Smokeless tobacco: snuff and chewing tobacco When these products are made, thousands of toxic and cancer causing substances are added. 3

SMOKING 3 forms: cigarettes, cigars, pipes 4

SMOKING: HARMFUL EFFECTS 1 st time smokers: feel pain or burning in the throat and lungs; feel sick; vomit Short term: Bad breath Bad skin Bad smelling clothes and hair Reduced athletic performance Greater risk of injury and slower healing time Increased risk of illness 5

SMOKING: HARMFUL EFFECTS Wrinkles Yellow teeth Loss of bone density = osteoporosis Decrease of lung power = less active Fertility problems 6

SMOKING: HARMFUL EFFECTS Cancer: lung, throat, stomach, bladder Increased risk of bronchitis and pneumonia Emphysema (breakdown of lung tissue) Heart disease Stroke Shorten your life by 10 years or more Expensive 7

SMOKELESS TOBACCO Smokeless tobacco is also called spit tobacco, chewing tobacco, chew, chaw, dip, and plug. 2 forms: snuff and chewing tobacco 8

SMOKELESS TOBACCO Snuff: fine-grain tobacco that comes in tea-bag like pouches; users “pinch” or “dip” it between their lower lip and gum. Chewing tobacco: comes in shredded, twisted or “bricked” tobacco leaves; users put it between their cheek and gum. Users let the tobacco sit in their mouth and suck on the tobacco juices, spitting often to get rid of the saliva that builds up. This allows nicotine to be absorbed into the bloodstream through the tissues in the mouth. 9

SMOKELESS TOBACCO: HARMFULL EFFECTS Bad breath Yellowish-brown stains on teeth Mouth sores Cracking and bleeding lips and gums Receding gums = teeth fall out Increased heart rate, high blood pressure, irregular heartbeats Increased risk heart attacks and brain damage (stroke) Cancer: lips, tongue, floor of the mouth, roof of the mouth, cheeks, gums, esophagus, stomach, bladder 10

E-CIGARETTES Electronic cigarettes are battery powered smoking devices. They use cartridges filled with a liquid that contains nicotine, flavorings, and other chemicals. A heating device in the e-cigarette converts the liquid into a vapor, which the person inhales: “vaping”. NOT a safe alternative to smoking: still puts nicotine into the body 11

E-CIGARETTES E-cigarettes don’t burn tobacco, so people don’t inhale the same amounts of tar and carbon monoxide as with regular cigarettes. BUT they still get an unhealthy dose of nicotine and other chemicals. 12

SECONDHAND SMOKE Comes from both the smoke that smokers exhale and the smoke floating from the end of the cigarette, cigar, or pipe. Contains thousands of toxic, cancer causing chemicals Significantly increases a person’s risk for: Respiratory infections (bronchitis, pneumonia) Asthma Coughing, sore throats, sniffling, sneezing Cancer Heart disease Can affect someone’s sports performance or ability to be active 13
