The New DRS Introduction

What is DRS? Digital repository for preservation and access – Maintains integrity of deposited content – Preserves content for future reuse regardless of changes in technology – Provides access through associated delivery services

Why New DRS? Implement digital preservation best practices and standards Improve metadata preservation Modern software to enable efficient processing and faster depositing Improve content management workflows

Why New DRS?

SOME DRS CONCEPTS

Files – Objects – Batches Files Digital ‘thing’ you are managing – e.g. image file, audio file, etc. Objects Groups of files that together make up a coherent unit of content - e.g. tiff master image and deliverable jpeg Batches Grouping of objects that are packaged together for deposit into DRS

DRS Models Objects Several related files Archival master TIFF image Delivery JPEG image Thumbnail JPEG image FILE

DRS Models Objects Objects = groups of files that together make up a coherent unit of content Archival master TIFF image Delivery JPEG image Thumbnail JPEG image FILE OBJECT: still image olvwork85592

DRS Models Objects Object descriptor holds all the metadata for an object and its files All of the metadata for the object and its files Archival master TIFF image Delivery JPEG image Thumbnail JPEG image FILE OBJECT: still image olvwork85592 object descriptor

Batches FILE OBJECT BATCH

DRS Content Models An object type supported by the DRS Supported content models: – Audio – PDS Document – Document – Still image – Text – Opaque

Depositing Content Batch Builder – Performs content characterization – Adds metadata – Performs file format validity checks – Packages files into objects and batches for deposit

Adding Metadata

Completed batch...

... is ready to deposit Need a supported SFTP client to deposit: WinSCP and FileZilla work well with DRS

DRS Loader Report

Managing Content DRS Web Admin – Search and view – Download – Make changes

Web Admin - Searching Quick search by identifier Advanced search by multiple metadata fields Search full text of documents – Text, HTML, and PDF with embedded text Facet search results to narrow down the search Save and restore search results Download content from the search results

Web Admin – View / Download View – batches – objects – files Download – single items – in bulk

Download and Upload Result Set Download Content in bulk 22 Quick Search Advanced Search

Add Files to Existing Objects File names must conform to DRS requirements MD5 checksum must accompany file upload

Rights Link main content to rights objects for information purpose Specify restrictions

Delete and Restore Objects – one at a time instantly – request deletion when more than one Files – one at a time instantly – 500 at a time instantly – request deletion when > 500 Batch (only delete) – instant deletion when batch is less than 5 days old – request for deletion for older batches

Edit Metadata One item at a time Many items at a time – coming soon

Accessing Content Public delivery services – Images – in browser – Page-turned objects – in browser – Audio – in browser – Other files (PDF, text, XML, etc) – delivers a link Depends on browser plug-ins Web Admin (for content owners) – Download original content as deposited
