2 Program History Program began in October 2004 with the development of a Concept of Operations followed by a Requirements Document Program Management Office formed in October 2005 and an initial integrator contract was awarded in August 2006 FDsys design and development proceeded through 2007 and subject matter experts came on board in 2008 The first public release of FDsys was launched on January 15, 2009 Since the initial launch GPO has been migrating content from GPO Access, making system improvements to complete release 1, and supporting Open Government Initiatives (e.g. CFR XML, FR XML, FR 2.0)

3 Release 1 Goals and Status Establish the foundational infrastructure –Completed in 2009 Establish a preservation repository –Completed in 2009 Replace GPO’s current public site –GPO Access sunset activities through September 2010 Perform a large scale data migration –40 out of 40 GPO Access collections are in FDsys and continuing to migrate one-off and special publications Provide operational continuity for the system –Continuity of access site operational in August 2010 –Full system failover operational in December 2010

4 Establish initial functionality then enable new functionality to support submission from additional sources, automate preservation processes in the preservation repository, and tailor FDsys to better meet user needs Feature-based implementation approach to allow for rapid development cycles Provides flexibility to enhance and improve the system based on expressed user needs between major releases of new functionality Implementation Approach

5 What is FDsys? FDsys is a Content Management System –FDsys securely controls digital content throughout its lifecycle to ensure content integrity and authenticity FDsys is a Preservation Repository –FDsys follows archival system standards to ensure long-term preservation and access of digital content FDsys is an Advanced Search Engine –FDsys combines extensive metadata creation with modern search technology to ensure the highest quality search experience

6 FDsys Search Features Search across multiple publications or collections of publications from a single search box. Perform an advanced search against robust metadata from a single advanced search page or retrieve a specific document by its citation. Construct complex search queries using Boolean and field operators. Refine and narrow searches by applying filters, sorting results, viewing historical editions, and searching within search results. Retrieve digitally signed PDF documents directly from search results. View more information about a publication and access multiple file formats from a More Information page. Access descriptive, authenticity, and preservation metadata for each document in MODS and PREMIS XML formats. Download content and metadata packaged together as a single ZIP file. Browse for a specific government publication and browse within the publication. Utilize context specific field level help and a searchable online help system. Retrieve bulk data downloads of select publications in XML format.
