Session 6: Sustainability and scalability of different forms of ICT-enabled innovations Group7:Digital Textbook Project, South Korea

1.A brief description of the Digital Textbook Project It was an initiative of the Korean Ministry of Education to develop digital textbook as a study assistance tool, which utilizes digital media to go beyond the limitations of conventional paper textbooks. One main advantage of digital textbooks is the possibility of updating the content on the fly without the need to wait for new yearly revisions.

2.2 Scale: i.Target subjects: Korean literature, English, Math, Social Studies and Science at the elementary level (5 & 6 grade) Differentiated English textbook at the elementary (grades 3-6) and secondary levels (1st grade). ii.the amount of participants: A total of 340 pilot school participated in the project from 2007 to 2011

2.4 Achievement: The goal of the Digital Textbook project is to create a future-oriented learning environment that enables learner-centred learning anywhere and anytime. ●Recent research findings indicate that digital textbooks contribute to enhancing students’ academic achievement, attitude towards subjects (e.g. science), problem-solving skills and self- regulated learning skills. ●Education reports indicate that students' attitude, confidence, engagement and concentration level in learning Social Studies improved when using digital textbooks. ●There are also studies that indicate enhancement in low achievers’ academic achievement by using digital textbooks. ●Byun (2008) further reports higher effectiveness in digital textbook use in rural areas.

3.Strategies for implementation and scaling up of the innovation.

4.Prospect for sustainability and scalability.

4.1 Sustainability: Sustainability : ●Technological environment in terms of:computers in schools, bandwidth for internet access at home and school. ●Advanced electronic and digital devices for everyday teaching and learning activities. Challenges for Sustainability: ●Cost effectiveness of the Digital Textbook. ●Concerns about students’ and teachers’ health (e.g., Visual Display Terminal syndrome)

4.2 Scalability: Scalability: ● Digital Textbook is accessible by anyone who possesses a school certification code. ●There are existing electronic educational resources that can be exploited for e-textbook development. ●Teacher communities have been developing and sharing teaching materials for classroom activities. ●The convergence of multimedia and e-learning resources can enhance the ways and effectiveness of use of digital textbooks in classrooms. ● Good internet infrastructure in SK in terms of penetration and bandwidth. ● Wireless internet services are available and the coverage of the services is expanding. Challenges for Scalability: ● not every classroom is equipped with enough computers for everyday use by individual students. ● the cost of mobile devices is very high. Teachers’ willingness to allow students to use mobile devices in the classroom, for fear of these being used by students for non-learning purposes (e.g., gaming, instant messaging, etc.).
