2 University Library System, CUHK 2 Why is Information Literacy Instruction Important? The values and attitudes of students have drastically changed with the advancement of information technology. Students are over-reliant on search engines. Many students lack the appropriate critical thinking skills needed for researching online and using information sources. Role of the reference librarian: from technical assistance on using library resources to information literacy instruction.

3 University Library System, CUHK 3 Two Major Trends in Hong Kong Higher Education 1.Four Year Normative Curriculum Move from a three- to a four-year curriculum in 2012. Effects on Academic Libraries Student population will increase by at least 1/3 from September 2012. An opportunity to integrate information literacy into the general education programs and curricular reform.

7 University Library System, CUHK 7 Student IT Proficiency Test CUHK Library proposed to develop a campus-wide information competency program for students in 2005. Information literacy was suggested for incorporation into the mandatory Student IT Proficiency Test of the University as a graduation requirement. The online Student IT Proficiency Test includes:  Basic operation of a computer system,  Using computer application software,  Computer ethics and copyrights,  Information security, and  Information literacy.

18 University Library System, CUHK 18 Information Literacy Tutorial Summary The Web is a platform to enable more student participation and enrich their learning experience. Engage students in the learning process e.g. games, interactive exercises, etc. Put information literacy into context.

19 University Library System, CUHK 19 More Opportunities Reference librarians were requested to provide more information literacy courses. The combination of face-to-face and Web-based instruction allows reference librarians to conduct more in-depth information literacy courses. Foster collaboration between faculty and librarians:  Modifying the tutorial by adding sources and research steps pertaining to a particular discipline.  Incorporating the tutorial into the e-learning platform of general education courses and discipline-based courses.
