April 8, 2014 Ontario Ministry of Transportation Rob Tardif Ontario Update on Border Traffic for FHWA Planning Initiative TBWG - Trade and Traffic Data Session

FHWA partnership with Ontario to develop O-D database to support infrastructure planning Ontario Ministry of Transportation products under development (2013 to 2015): Commercial and Passenger intercept surveys at Ontario’s 14 border crossings with NY, MI, MN Document time series travel trends (2000, 2006, 2013/2014) Prepare “User Guide” to effectively maximize OD survey results Prepare “How To Guide” to replicate best practices for U.S. deployment of OD survey Provide case studies to demonstrate the range of analysis potential and support model development Project Scope

Transportation Planning Branch 3 Commercial Vehicle Survey Sites  Completed commercial vehicle intercept surveys between 2011 and 2013  166 sites, 50,000 surveys  Surveys at 13 border crossings  8,200 surveys with U.S. travel

2006 National Road Survey – Weekly Truck Volumes Lacolle Ivy Lea Niagara Sarnia Windsor Houlton Calais Morris Pacific Coutts Weyburn Cornwall

Survey is being conducted in three phases: 2011/2012 – Northern Ontario (4 crossings, 8900 surveys) 2012/2013 – Niagara (4 crossings, 33,000 surveys) 2014 – St Lawrence & Detroit/Port Huron (6 crossings, 30,000 surveys (est.)) Fall 2014/Spring 2015 integrate data, prepare for model traffic assignments Collect information on: Where (trip origin/destination, intermediate stops) What (type of vehicle) Who (how many travellers per vehicle) Why (purpose of travel and crossing preferences) When (time/date of travel and how often) Border Passenger Surveys

Transportation Planning Branch / Border Passenger Surveys Completed 42,000 passenger vehicle intercept surveys from 8 crossings In 2014, anticipate 30,000 from 6 crossings
