Presentation transcript:

Monday January 13 th, 2014 Welcome back!

Am Lit: Do Now ( ) What binder tab are we still using? (aka what literary movement are we studying?) Write down any information you know about Fredrick Douglass. Who was that man? Also, what is an abolitionist ? For my elite thinkers: How could a black man during slavery write a story about himself that would appeal to white readers who have nothing in common with him, and who might even be the enemy in the plight of the slaves?

Monday’s Purpose Students should refresh Their definition of Realism (the literary movement). Their definitions of key elements of a writer’s style In order to: (starting tomorrow) Be able to analyze Douglass’ story in a similar way to how we analyzed the rhetoric of Jonathon Edwards’ “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God” sermon. Illustrate the qualities of Douglass’s story that make it a part of Realism

Binder work: First Binder Assignment: 1. Three interesting facts about Fredrick Douglass pg Define all bold terms pg. 559 (Use glossaries in back of textbook) When done, take a vocab worksheet, read the directions VERY CAREFULLY. HW: Finish Vocab maps

Am Lit DO NOW: Take Vocab worksheet Exercise 2. Complete using only your vocab maps from yesterday. For each number, write the letter of the correct choice before it, then the vocab word after it.

How did Douglass become so powerful and influential that President Lincoln invited him to the White House for advice? It wasn’t just Douglass’ story, but how he tells it that is persuasive.

Success Today Means 1-14 You can verbally define at least 4 of the vocab words. You can read for comprehension and demonstrate analytical abilities via responding to the marginal instructions as we read together today. True success means we don’t have to take anything home to work on today because we stayed focused in class.

Reading Purpose 1-14 First, read for comprehension (understanding) in order to identify Douglass’ purpose for writing this piece. Second, read to analyze how Douglass’ style makes his story persuasive ANNOTATION: != me likey ?= interesting:we should talk more about this ??= wha wha what?? (I do not understand)

Am Lit DO NOW: 1-15 How would you describe Douglass’ style? (How he talks) Give an example or two to support your claim Douglass’ writes in a _______ style. For example, _________

Success Today Means 1-15 We finish reading the narrative. You ask questions for clarification and demonstrate your reading comprehension by completing the “Assessment Practice” at end of packet. You can demonstrate you analysis skills by filling in the Graphic Organizers on pgs

Am Lit DO NOW: 1-16 Take a vocab exercise 3 and complete without using notes. Top scorers get dippied. When finished, take out Douglass packet

Success Today Means 1-16 You came to class with your packet completed. You effectively collaborate with your elbow partner to review answers to the marginal questions You use the insights gained today to revisit your graphic organizers which we will use in review tomorrow (QUIZ FRIDAY!)

Am Lit: Do Now ( ) In paragraph form, respond: what is Douglass’ style like overall? Give a textual example of at least three aspects of his style (use your G.O. from end of packet) I will cold call three random names in addition to any volunteers. If you read, you get dippied. If you cannot answer, you get a demerit.

Success Today Means 1-17 Compare your understanding and analysis with peers through participating in creating Traveling Concept Maps Prep for your first quiz tomorrow over story content, elements of style, writing purpose, and vocabulary.

Am Lit 1-17 First Quiz of 3 rd Quarter We will finish reviewing marginal questions and then take the quiz. You will need a pencil for this scantron quiz.
