(R2, R4, W9) Instruction Warm Up: Pick Up Vocabulary Words, Take Out Theme Packet Direct: Write 7 point thesis about how rhetoric (literary devices and deliberate language) work together to support the central idea. Assessment: Write the rest of the essay in class. Scored using the 9 point scale Due at the end of the hour: rough draft of Scarlet Letter Essay Due Tonight: Type your Rhetorical Analysis Essay(Hawthorn/Lincoln) and Submit to Turnitin by Monday, 09/11/17 at 11:59am Homework Complete: Type your Rhetorical Analysis Essay and Submit to Turnitin by Monday, 09/11/17 at 11:59am Scarlet letter essay typed and turned into turnitin by Thursday 9/14- 11:59pm. Ongoing: Study Sadlier Unit 3 Vocabulary Words: Quiz on September 22nd Cell Phone Should Stay In Your Backpack All Class Period

Assignment Used For Assessment: The Scarlet Letter Assessment Packet (see scoring guide) How to earn a 9 today: Today you will be graded on the AP nine-point scale. In addition to today’s learning scale you must refer to your hand out to meet the objectives for an “8 or 9” “These well written essays reveal an understanding of the entire novel. They define clearly the speaker’s state of mind and discuss, with apt and specific reference, how literary devices reflect these responses….they will be characterized by a convincing interpretation of the novel’s theme(s) & consistent control over the elements of writing, [demonstrating] the ability to read w/perception & express ideas with clarity & skill.” (AP Scoring Guide 8-9)

(R2, R4, W4) Instructions: Independent Work: Read and annotate “Witch Hunt, Pledges & Blacklist” Read “Why I Wrote The Crucible” annotate looking for central idea,claims, deliberate language and rhetorical devices Do the “Why I wrote the Crucible” Rhetorical Analysis worksheet – turn in when complete. Collaborative (and/or homework): 1. Read Still Puritan After All These Years together. 2. Do the pink Puritan Ethics sheet. Homework if not completed in class.
