READING IS a process in which readers comprehend and construct meaning.

TEXT BOOKS These are content-area books such as your Earth Science or Biology book, your World History book, or Government book, even a Spanish text book fits this category.

FIVE STAGES OF READING In section 3 of your binder - Reading Section - take these notes. You will have a quiz on Friday over this material. Remember the five stages, their purposes, and activities. 1. PRE-READING 2. READING 3. RESPONDING 4. EXPLORING 5. APPLYING

Each stage has a purpose Purpose means a reason for which something is done. You will need to know the purpose of each stage for your quiz on Friday.

1. PRE-READING PURPOSE: To activate the student’s background knowledge of the subject that they are reading.

2. READING PURPOSE: To focus on the main ideas and details of the text and organize what you are reading.

3. RESPONDING PURPOSE: To react to the chapter, ask questions to clarify confusions, and make connections to your own life.

The Assignment By the end of the week, you will be able to complete all the reading stages for Chapter 4.1 (Honors 4.1 and 4.2) of your Earth Science book. You will hand in a copy of all the activities you completed for all the stages of reading. In other words, you are SHOWING how you read a text book. Assignment is worth 100 pts. or 25 pts. per stage. Due at the end of class on Thursday, Sept. 30

ACTIVITIES Each of the five reading stages have specific activities to help SHOW that you are connecting to the text, comprehending information, and engaged in your reading process. For your test, you will need to know the activities for each stage.

1.Pre-Reading Activity - before reading Scanning the text for what the chapter will be about- the KEY CONCEPT. To scan, look at titles, subtitles, pictures, maps, charts, bold-face words. Write down what you think the chapter will be about. Use a complete sentence such as - From scanning the text, I think this chapter will be about... Write about where and when you have heard about this key concept before. Now write three statements of fact about this subject. Finally, develop three to six questions you have about this subject.

2. Reading Activities First - read the entire section. Second - outline the section (Writers Inc. pg. 394) Keep a class notes column on the right side. Third - Make a list of 10 vocabulary words with definitions. Fourth - Draw a graphic organizer of the information. (Writers Inc. pg. 48-49)

3. Responding Activities Go back to the questions from the pre-reading stage. Answer those questions. Then write about how your own life is influenced by the information you learned in this reading. Finally, ask three new questions beyond the text.

4. Exploring Activities Sorting vocabulary words - put the words from you vocabulary list into categories - for instance, by type of rocks or ways of mining rocks or rocks found in MT. Draw a data chart - See example on assignment handout. You can change the headings to fit your needs.

CONGRATULATIONS! The applying stage is your quiz or test over this chapter. Also, Mr. Day will be giving a test as well. Show him that you were able to understand this chapter’s material because you used the reading stages. GOOD JOB!
