3 SIT WITH YOUR PARTNER.  You will have 10 MINUTES to complete the SMELL strategy by analyzing the 5 essential pieces of a persuasive text.  Be sure to work WITH your partner.  Provide TEXT-EVIDENCE from the speech when possible.  If you don’t understand, ASK!  You will have to use the information in a GRADED WRITING before the end of class today! “America’s School Children”

4 Yesterday, we assessed your reading comprehension and grammar skills. Today, we will assess your writing skills.  You will compose a WELL-WRITTEN RESPONSE to the prompt provided.  As you respond to the prompt, you should refer to your SMELL GRAPHIC ORGANIZER and your DISCUSSIONS with your peers.  Although this is a DIAGNOSTIC assessment, it will still be a FORMATIVE grade... so take your time! WRITING DIAGNOSTIC

5 MOVE TO SIT WITH YOUR PARTNER. You will have 5 MINUTES to SHARE AND COMPARE your responses from your SMELL graphic organizer: You will ROTATE partners each time you move through the 5 essential pieces of a persuasive text. 6 We will use “ATTACKING THE QUESTION” to determine what the prompt is asking us to do... After reading “America’s School Children,” the Presidential Address given by President Barack Obama, identify and explain the speaker’s purpose for the speech along with his main points. Be sure to include textual evidence from the speech in your writing. WRITING PROMPT
