A NEW DIMENSION TO SOUTH DAKOTA EDUCATION ASSOCIATION 2

NEA GREAT PUBLIC SCHOOLS GRANT In 2013, SDEA joined 8 other state affiliates in an SLO Consortium. These states were awarded three-year grants from NEA’s GPS Fund to pursue work in the implementation and development of SLOs. SDEA received $500,000 to realize its vision. 3

800+ EDUCATORS TRAINED SO FAR! SLO Boot Camp (intense 4-day training of 30 hours on SLOs and Assessment at Granite Springs Lodge near Alexandria) In-service Trainings in Scotland, Deubrook, and Webster (Scotland, Florence, De Smet, Marion*, and Howard in ) Ed Camps in Brookings and Rapid City SLO Workshops (15 hours on SLOs and Assessment done in Custer, Mitchell, Brookings, Aberdeen, Watertown, Pierre, Rapid City, Yankton, NSU Harrisburg Elk Point-Jefferson Sioux Falls Winner* 4

TRAINING AND DEVELOPMENT PARTNERSHIPS SD Department of Education E.S.A.s/Ed. Cooperatives American Institutes for Research 5

THE PRICE IS RIGHT—IT’S FREE! SLO grant allow us to provide the training to districts free upon request—just need an SDEA local affiliate in district Already used training days provided by the state? This is a nice alternative/addition. Not competitive with ESA’s/Cooperatives, but supplemental. We routinely recommend contacting them for additional training at sites where we’ve been. 6

GRANT-RELATED TRAINING TOPICS 7

SLO OVERVIEW AND ITS PLACE IN THE SD TEACHER EFFECTIVENESS MODEL An overview of SLO’s, the process guide and explaining how they fit into the SD Teacher Effectiveness Model (good for new teachers to SD or teaching, and for districts just getting started) 8

DIFFERENTIATED SLOS The recommended model and a change from last summer What we learned in the past year let us give deference to the model that lets teachers expect growth from all students without expecting each one to reach the same level of growth 9

ASSESSMENT BLUEPRINTS Helps teachers plan a test that adequately covers the standards being measured 10

SLO SUCCESS! PROFESSIONAL CONVERSATION AS THE KEYSTONE TO THE SLO PROCESS Encourages collaborative, thought- provoking conversations between teachers and administrators through practice and reflection using their own SLOs Based on the work of Charlotte Danielson 11

RUBRICS For topics where performance occurs or where test questions won’t cut it 12

CREATING QUALITY ASSESSMENT ITEMS Best practices for writing and revising quality assessments 13

USING DEPTH OF KNOWLEDGE IN CREATING ASSESSMENT ITEMS 14

SOUTH DAKOTA ASSESSMENT PORTAL 15 A free online assessment tool from the SD Dept. of Education, upgraded this summer to be more user friendly. Create your own questions, or use thousands of pre-loaded questions to create tests. Great practice with online testing for students

OTHER TOPICS NOT RELATED TO SLOS 16

ED CAMPS Training topics are selected by educators present at the training Topics are things they want to share with others or topics on which they want to learn from others Participants are engaged because topics are of high interest 17

I CAN DO IT! Classroom management training, great for new teachers or those who need a refresher Tips and ready-to-use ideas to perk up lessons, engage kids, and create an environment that is safe and structured for children Hands-on activities and a book (Districts may have to pay for printing costs for the book, depending upon how many are needed.) 18

Built upon other personality assessments like Meyers- Briggs and Keirsey, Don Lowry’s True Colors uses color to identify characteristics that make up your personality. This training is a great way for educators to better understand and interact with their students and colleagues who fall into all color categories This training uses a pack of cards and a short personality inventory which must be purchased from the company. Districts would need to purchase these at cost for each person trained 19

FIRST YEARS, GREAT CAREER! 20 A booklet developed by SDEA with information on starting the year, dealing with parents and holding conferences, special education issues, internet safety, the code of ethical conduct, bullying and a host of other topics. Copies can be downloaded at

OTHER TOOLS FOR YOUR USE SLO Repository uses SLOs from DOE summer courses; SDEA hosts the site and DOE links to it on their site. orepository.htm orepository.htm SDEA created an SLO calculator. DOE links to it on their site. m m
