Static Images

What does static image mean? – Static = not moving – Image = a picture So, a picture that isn’t moving However, just how a picture tells a thousand words, we like you to produce pictures that tell a story in some way There are many techniques you can use to do this

Colours Certain colours have certain connotations This means that when you see that colour you think of something else This is used by people all the time Think about what colour road signs are The red means danger and makes a driver take notice of them

Font Font is the style and size writing is Just how colours have certain connotations, so do fonts Think about if you were designing a party invite – Would you use this font: PARTY – Or this one: PARTY Large writing can convey emotions like anger or excitement Smaller writing can mean more negative emotions like fear

Dominant Image This is the main picture within an image It will be the first one that grabs your attention when you see the image It will almost always be the most important image and will probably be linked to the idea in the poster that the artists wants to get across

Layout This is how the parts of an image are arranged within the image Things that are related are usually close to one another Things that are more important are often at the top Things that are less important are often at the bottom or in the corner

Contrast Putting two very different things next to one is a very effective technique It can increase the power of whatever characteristic is different to the other object So a tall person next to a short person looks even taller

Symbols A symbol is a visual representation of something else They can be very powerful because they explain an idea in a way that couldn’t be done with words A dove for peace is one example

Use the static images around the room the answer the following questions Write the questions out in full 1. Why has the colour been used in the image? Orange = Quiet American; Yellow = Sunshine; Red & Black = No One Comes Here Any More 2. What sort of idea is represented by these fonts FONT FONT 3. What is the dominant image in these images? Hellboy; Dulce et; Quiet American 4. Why do you think Arms Outstretched has the layout it does? 5. Explain the contrast in Mad Artist and Dulce et 6. What is the symbol in Your End and Don’t You Understand and what does it represent EXTENSION Choose one of the images from Yr 11 and use all the information to explain what message the artist wanted to put across
