1. Visual and Verbal Features of Static Images (1.7, 3 credits) All verbal (spoken, written) and visual (things we see) elements must work together to show a message/idea/mood/feeling. This means that there must be a link between the visual and verbal.

2. Visual features. Symbols. Something used for or regarded as representing something else; a material object representing something. It goes beyond what the sign represents. For example, a flag as a symbol it may express at a deeper level a whole range of feelings, experiences and meanings that the history of the country embodies. Effect: Adds depth of thought to your work.

3. Visual features Dominant image. The dominant image is the shape/figure/object/words which stand out from the rest. Effect: It attracts attention to the image and should be its most effective part. It may be graphic or language based, or both.

4. Colour Colour is more than decorative. Different colours suggest different messages. E.g. pink is associated with femininity, white with purity, red with danger, anger or love, and green with nature. Black is associated with death. Contrast colours (e.g black and white) can show the juxta-position of two contrasting or opposing ideas in the same text. Effect: Adds depth of meaning to your text and expresses deep ideas subtlely.

Other visual features Background images/colour Effect: sets mood/tone of the image Reinforces or contrast with the main visual image Layering/pasting of images over each other Effect: show different events/layers of history/perspectives/past or future together/events happening at the same time. Important images/words next to each other. Effect: to show the relationship between the verbal and visual.

10. Verbal features Verbal features should back up the main ideas of the text and link to the visual images in a clever and subtle way. You should choose words or quotes from your chosen text. ･ What kind of vocabulary has been used? E.g. colloquial language, jargon, slang  Effect: show us the tone of the story. Have words been used cleverly? E.g. puns, hyperboles, cliches. Effect: Attract attention.  ･ Has any figurative language been used? E.g. similes, metaphors, personification ･ Have any sound devices been used? Alliteration, rhyme, repetition, assonance Effect: Reinforce visual images and create images in our minds.
